Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2024: Athens, Greece

athens

>> Book your accommodation in Athens

The birthplace of the Western civilization, Athens is a cosmopolitan metropolis that deserves a place on your bucket list for 2024.

Active and buzzing all year round, Athens offers you something both in winter and summer, indoor and outdoor.

When the weather is good, walk around the ancient streets, visit some of the most impressive historical sites , like the legendary Acropolis, the Greek and Roman Agoras, the Tower of Winds, Odeon of Herodes Atticus, an ancient theater with the mighty Acropolis guarding over it, or Kerameikos. You can find knowledge and cats everywhere.

You can also visit the birthplace of modern Olympic games, the Panathenaic Stadium, an impressive white marble stadium where the first modern Olympic games were held in 1896.

When the weather is not that great, you can enjoy one of the many culinary tours, soak up the local culture, learn dancing or playing some folklore music. Embrace the local culture in Syntagma Square, home of the Parliament building, in the busy neighborhood of Monastiraki or the joyful taverns of Plaka.

You can learn about the Greek and Athenian culture and history in many of the city museums like the Acropolis Museum, National Archeological Museum, Basil & Elise Goulndris Foundation, Byzantine & Christian Museum, Benaki Museum, National Gallery, and the Museum of Cycladic Art.

If you need a bit more silence, you can always walk up to Anafiotika, a small dream like neighborhood on the way to the Acropolis, visit and meditate in the National Gardens or venture up to Mount Lycabettus to enjoy some astonishing views of Athens and the surrounding region.

Getting to Athens is easy, as Greece’s capital is served by an international airport and two ports. You can also get here by land, whether you prefer taking a train, a bus or renting a car.

Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2024: Avila, Spain

St Teresa Of Avila Church Spain

>> Book your accommodation in Avila

Avila is one of the walled cities of Spain that should be on everyone’s bucket list for 2024. The city is situated a little over 100 km away from Madrid and takes an hour and a half to reach by car. It is the capital of the province Avila and has been a strategic city in the country for years.

One of the things that Avila is well known for is its walls. The high walls circle round the city and you can even walk on the top of them. In fact, I highly recommend it because it gives you a bird’s eye view of the countryside too.

The city is also a famous pilgrimage point for Christians because of St. Teresa of Avila was born here. She is one of the patron saints of the Carmelite order. The church which is dedicated to St. Teresa of Avila is the focus of the pilgrimage.

Other interesting things to do in Avila include the Cathedral of Avila, Palacio de los Davila, Basilica de San Vicente and Parish of St. Peter the Apostle. As you can see, the majority of the attractions in the city are religious. The buildings are old and their styles are pretty unique when you compare them to churches and cathedrals in other parts of the European continent. So even if you are not religious or on a pilgrimage, you will find that Avila is well worth the visit.

Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2024: The Azores, Portugal

The azores

>> Book your accommodation in Ponta Delgada

This quiet archipelago of nine volcanic islands is easy to overlook, given their location in the middle of the Atlantic. But the Azores abound with natural beauty and incredible scenery, and are well worth a visit. Officially an autonomous region of Portugal, the islands have their own distinct culture, but with plenty of traditional Portuguese influences in architecture and food.

The islands are beautiful and peaceful. Dramatic coastlines, sandy beaches, geothermal activity, historic towns, and verdant rolling countrysides are everywhere. Hiking, climbing, caving, kayaking and whale watching are popular activities. Because of their location on the Gulf Stream, waters stay warm until December, making it a perfect destination for off season travel. The Azores are ideal for those wanting a more laid-back location and somewhere to stay active. This is not the place to go for shopping and night-life, although the main cities on São Miguel and Terceira do have some noteworthy bars.

Most visitors fly into Ponta Delgada on São Miguel, the largest of the islands. São Miguel is lovely and worth a visit (especially the black sand beaches), but don’t spend all your time there. Take a flight to one of the other islands like Terceira or Flores. Terceira’s main city, Angra do Heroismo is a UNESCO world heritage site. And the entire island of Flores is a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Visitors will be captivated by picturesque port towns, colorful Portuguese architecture, 16th and 17th century forts and churches, incredible nature reserves, caves, volcanic natural pools and whale watching. Hiking is very popular on the islands and the trails are the best way to view the natural beauty of the Azores. After an active day, enjoy a traditional meal of local cheese, fish and wine. Pico island in the Azores is famous for its vineyards.

Island hopping is relatively easy in the Azores. There are daily flights between most islands and ferry service is also available. To explore the islands you will need to organize a tour or rent a car. Public transit is not great in the Azores. In fact, I don’t think I saw one single public bus the entire time I was there. Taxi service is also available.

Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2024: Bad Bentheim, Germany

Germany Bad Bentheim castle

>> Book your accommodation in Bad Bentheim

Bad Bentheim in Germany is one of the lesser known and yet gorgeous spots in Germany. Located in Lower Saxony, this town is known for two things: the Bad Bentheim castle and mineral baths.

Unlike many of the bigger cities in the country, the town is quiet and peaceful. It has the sprawling countryside right at its doorstep. You will find that the town isn’t very large. You could easily walk all around it in an hour and that too at an extremely slow pace. This is one of the reasons why everyone loves it.

While many people head here to stay in one of the hotels in the area and enjoy the thermal baths, you will find that in summer, the camping grounds open up. With the numerous hiking paths that are nearby, the area starts bustling with local tourists.

Just because summer is the peak season doesn’t mean that you can’t visit it in winter too. The castle, which is one of the main things to do in Bad Bentheim, is open all year round and it looks so pretty with snow on top of it. The local restaurants are also open and have a nice cozy vibe. It feels so good to enter them after wandering around in the cold. The best part is since the place is pretty offbeat, the prices of everything is pretty reasonable!

Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2024: Brasov, Romania

brasov

>>Book your accommodation in Brasov

They don’t call it a fairytale city for nothing. In a little corner in mythical Transylvania, at the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, Brașov is a charming medieval town and one of Romania’s top tourism hubs.

The city itself, with its lively, picturesque Old Town, has a lot to keep you busy. You can wander on its narrow, winding streets, see the Black Church, Council Square, museums, old buildings, plus the medieval city gates, walls, and watchtowers that surround it. Take a break at a cafe or restaurant (there are so many), then start over.

You can also head out of the city and visit the medieval towns in its vicinity. Bran is one of them, with its famed Dracula’s Castle, but there are many others, with fortified churches, old fortresses, mansions, ruins, and an overall authentic way of life.

For outdoorsy people, it’s a base camp for a bunch of activities in nature. Rising just above the Old Town, there’s Mt. Tȃmpa, with a cable car, panoramic views, and a bunch of easy hiking routes. Then there’s Poiana Brașov, the biggest and most popular ski resort in Romania, which turns into a mountain biking and hiking playground in summer. And let’s not forget the many rock climbing areas near Brașov that are worth checking out if you fancy that kind of adventure.

Brașov is surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains on almost all sides – Postăvaru, Piatra Mare, Piatra Craiului, Bucegi, Ciucaș are the closest. So, pretty much anywhere you look, your eyes will be delighted with endless fir forests, green pastures, rocky ridges, alpine meadows, caves, rivers, lakes, you name it! All of these, of course, are intertwined with history, legends, and myths.

Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2024: Bratislava , Slovakia

bratislava

>> Book your accommodation in Bratislava

The small capital of Slovakia is a picturesque city worth spending your time in 2024.

The home city for the coronation of many Hungarian Kings and Queens it is a well-preserved historical town. With a small and cozy main square (Hviezdoslavovo námestie) surrounded by Baroque buildings, the town is a portal through time. No meter if you stay in front of the Primatial Palace, Michael’s Gate or walk the path of Napoleon, and visit the house where the 1805 peace was signed, the energy of city will fill you.

For some historical vibes, visit the Military History Museum in the Old City center hosted in a tower that offers lovely views of the main street, or visit Bratislava Castle. Take a day trip via boat to Devin Castle where the Danube separates three countries or sit down near St. Martin’s Cathedral and listen to sound of bells. No matter what you prefer, this little capital can offer you some unique experiences.

The “smurffed” color Blue Church – Church of St. Elizabeth comprises a unique architecture rarely seen elsewhere. Just a bit away from the narrow streets of the historic city center, it feels like miles away in time.

Within the Old Town, you can find some great food, wines, and home brew beers. From the traditional dishes worth trying out we can mention bryndzové halušky (potato dumplings with sheep’s cheese) and traditional soups.

If you are interested in some fancy foods, you can always go up to the tv-tower restaurant locally just called UFO, for an amazing meal and some astonishing views from the observation deck.

Easy to get from all major cities of Europe via car, bus, or train, Bratislava also has an international airport with a few international flights from Athens, London, Dublin, Milan, and others.

Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2024: Brussels, Belgium

Brussels - Belgium Atomium

>> Book your accommodation in Brussels

Brussels is one gorgeous city and it is an incredibly popular place to visit if you are headed to Belgium. There’s a good reason why people head to the city. The cobbled streets, the gorgeous buildings, the myriad of art and museums are just the tip of what makes the city popular.

One of the best parts about the city is that it is very walkable. Plus there is a great public transport system in place which really helps when moving about the outer parts of the city. If you choose to head here by car, plan your route in advance because finding parking is super difficult.

Brussels is well known for its cuisine but what people really come for is its waffles and chocolate. You will find waffle stores in almost every part of the city. Most of the waffles are topped up with whipped cream and all kinds of fruits and toppings. Trust me! It is so hard to choose.

The chocolatiers are equally famous. The best part is these chocolates can be parceled and taken home. Just beware that in the summer months these will melt so pop them in your mouth or carry them with care.

If you are thinking about visiting the city in 2024, I would recommend spending 2 days in Brussels. This will give you a chance to visit all the museums, take in the active nightlife, enjoy a couple of beers and even head out on day trips to places like the Atomium and the Horta museum.

Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2024: Crete, Greece

crete

>> Book your accommodation in Heraklio Town

Crete, Greece, is a captivating island that often escapes the mainstream traveler’s attention, but that’s a shame because it’s nothing short of enchanting! The island boasts an array of breathtaking natural landscapes. Pristine beaches dot the entire coastline, each one offering a unique experience and scenery. The best beaches are along the East Coast. Not far from Chania, you can enjoy Stavros Beach, Nea Chora Beach, and Marathi Beach. But many travelers like to take at least one day to embark on a day trip to more secluded beaches, like Elafonissi, Fallassarna, or Balos Beach.

Crete is also home to gorgeous hiking adventures, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts. At its heart lies the famed Samaria River Gorge, an epic natural wonder that arguably claims the title of Europe’s longest and most awe-inspiring gorge. There are also snowcapped peaks in the White Mountains, ancient monasteries, and coastal towns that are only accessible on foot or by boat!

However, you also won’t be short of things to do in the cities. Heraklion and Chania are the two most populated cities, and each is worth visiting! The city of Heraklion is more commercial but close to fascinating historical sites like the Palace of Knossos and Zeus Cave. It’s also home to the largest university and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum! On the other hand, Chania is a more charming city that people love for its vibrant food scene, markets, nightlife, and the Old Venetian Port with remnants of the 17th Century.

Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2024: Favignana, Italy

Favignana

>> Book your accommodation in Favignana

If you are looking for a sunny European island away from the big international tourist routes, then look no further than Favignana.

Favignana is an island off the west coast of Sicily. It is part of a group of three islands including the smaller Levanzo and Marettimo. It is super easy to reach with a 30 minute hydrofoil journey from Trapani in Sicily.
Despite being the biggest of the three islands, it is still small enough to allow you to explore all its secrets by bicycle in a few days.

Well, at least a few days, as Favignana is packed with things to do. Of course, the main attractions are the beaches and the incredible transparent water in all shades of blue. Cala Azzurra, Cala Rossa, Bue Marino, and Cala Preveto are only the most famous of a long list.

To discover some of the island’s history, the former Florio factory, once the largest tuna processor in Europe, offers an interesting insight into an activity that has now disappeared. With its slightly decadent charm, the village of Favignana lends itself to beautiful photographic shots, romantic walks, and delicious banquets of Sicilian cuisine.
However, one of the most fascinating aspects of Favignana involves its use as a quarry for many years. Throughout the island, there are still many abandoned open quarries. If you want to visit one, check the “Garden of the Impossible” (Il Giardino dell’Impossibile). The owner, Mrs. Maria Gabriella Campo, with the patience of 30 years, has transformed the large quarry into a lush garden of enchanting beauty! Something everybody said was impossible!

Many people on holiday in Sicily go to Favignana for a day trip. It’s totally doable, but maybe let yourself be carried away by the slow pace instead. Come here for a long weekend or even for a week to appreciate a still wild and beautiful nature!

Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2024: Grado, Italy

grado

>> Book your accommodation in Grado

Grado, located on the picturesque Adriatic coast of Italy, is a real insider tip among the best destinations in 2024. Grado offers the perfect conditions for a vacation on the Upper Adriatic in Italy with its unique Italian atmosphere, breathtaking sandy beaches and a picturesque old town.

When vacationing in Grado, you get to enjoy many highlights. One of them is Grado’s mile-long sandy beach with its nostalgic promenade, which still exudes the historical charm of times past. More than 100 years ago, Grado was an imperial seaside resort and the motto was already then: see and be seen. Not far from the beach is the charming historic center of Grado, which invites you to explore its winding cobblestone streets, ancient churches, quaint shops and intimate cafés.

The area around Grado is also a great place for a day trip. A very special experience is a boat trip to the island of the Church of Barbana, which is an important place of pilgrimage in Grado. Leaving from the picturesque Port of Grado and sailing through the Grado Lagoon is an unforgettable experience. Another tip for an excursion is to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Aquileia and the Val Cavanata nature reserve, where it is even possible to observe the flamingos.

ios

>> Book your accommodation in Ios Chora

A small party Island is home of good music, good people, and sunshine, Ios is an ideal place for young couples to let some stress out or enjoy some quality time together in 2024.

No matter if you try to organize a romantic proposal at sunset in front of the traditional church overlooking the port, or you try to sneak in a ring during a romantic dinner in one of the cozy seaside taverns, you are guaranteed to make the moment special for both of you.

Beside all the romantic locations on the island, Ios is a water sports and diving heaven for those who seek the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Some of the most beautiful beaches we could mention are Mylopotas Beach, Manganari Beach, Gialos Beach, and Valmas Beach.

If you like the noise, many clubs and beach parties are at your disposal, but if you like some silence and meditation, you can always take a hike to view the vistas or get to one of the secluded beaches.

The island is home to a few historical sites like the Panagia Gremiotissa Church with its stunning views, the Museum of Archeology, Homer’s Tomb, and the prehistoric settlement of Skarkos.

Explore the narrow streets of Chora (Town), take a day trip to the neighboring islands, or visit the Skarkos Cave.

The island is an ideal hub for the island hoppers, as it is so close to both Santorini and Crete so you can take a flight to one of the neighboring islands and just hop on a boat to reach Ios. Plus, it is also on the ferry line from Athens and other Cycladic Islands.

Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2024: Ischia, Italy

ischia

>> Book your accommodation in Ischia

For a local experience in Italy, consider visiting the island of Ischia in 2024. This little island is an idyllic spot in the Tyrrhenian Sea where it feels like time has been standing still for a few decades. You’ll find clothes drying outside in the hot Italian sun, grapes and tomatoes growing in micro plots along the roads, and streets with vendors selling local liqueurs and other souvenirs. Ischia is well worth a visit, even if you can only come for a day on the ferry from Naples.

The star of the show on Ischia, however, is the Aragonese Castle. The castle is a small island fortress that is connected to Ischia by a footbridge. Originally built in 474 BC, the grounds have ruins and structures that date back several centuries. You can explore the Aragonese Caslte of Ischia over the course of a few hours, during which time you can see the onsite Torture Museum, admire the stunning views of Ischia and nearby Capri, and see the present crypt of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption. When you’ve finished exploring the grounds, find a seat at one of the onsite cafes and order an espresso or an Aperol spritz to enjoy while you look out over the water.

Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2024: London, England

london

>> Book your accommodation in London

If you are looking for an incredible city to explore in 2024, go to London. The British capital has a lot to offer and a month is not enough to explore it. There are many things to do in London, but if it is your first time in the city you should definitely stick to the most popular attractions. Visit Westminster Abbey and take a look at the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. Not far from it, Churchill War Rooms will offer insights into one of the toughest times in British History. From there, you can walk across St. James’ Park to reach Buckingham Palace, one of the most iconic places to see in London.

Museum geeks will love the British Museum: it’s free to visit, like many other museums in London. For the best views in the city, go up the London Eye. On a clear day you can see all the way to Windsor. Not far from it, also on the South Bank, you will find the Tate Modern Gallery, which is also free to visit. The exhibit focuses on contemporary (international art). Go to the terrace on the 10th floor for stunning views that overlook St. Paul’s Cathedral, which is an easy walk away along the iconic Millennium Bridge.

Another place you should not visit during your trip to London is the Tower of London, which played an important role in the history of the city. Once just a fortress and a royal palace, it became a prison and many executions took place there, including that of Anne Boleyn, one of the wives of Henry VIII.

When it comes to food, London is always at the world’s forefront of new culinary trends and it’s been nominated the most vegan friendly city in the world! The city has a strong vegan culture, with lots of restaurants that solely serve plant based dishes. For example at Roast, at the very heart of London Borough Market (one of the best markets in London), you will find a selection of excellent vegan dishes, including the vegan fondant dessert which is absolutely heavenly.

Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2024: Lyon , France

Lyon

>> Book your accommodation in Lyon

When people think about France their attention is usually drawn to Paris. While Paris struggles with over tourism, there is a lovely city named Lyon that is so worth visiting. The best part is that Lyon has its own airport and is connected by train too, so if you aren’t driving in France, you can still get to the city easily.

Now many people will ask if Lyon is worth it? I’ll be honest. There are plenty of mixed opinions on this one. Don’t go to Lyon expecting the glitz and glamor of Paris. This city is very cute. It had an old town with loads of amazing cafes and restaurants. In fact, Lyon is well known for its cuisine and food is one of the main reasons why people head here every year.

It also has some really cool Roman ruins which are remarkably well preserved. I recommend climbing up Fourviere hill. The view from the top is unparalleled. If you are a history buff, you will find that Lyon has loads of museums.

The best part is that Lyon is very walkable and has an excellent public transport system. So it is really easy to explore. Speaking of walking, you should walk along the riverwalk. The views of the city here, especially late evening, are really pretty and it is rather peaceful too.

Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2024: Malta

Malta

>> Book your accommodation in Valletta

I maintain the opinion that Malta is one of the most underrated destinations in Europe. It’s a beautiful island – well technically it’s two islands, Malta and Gozo. They’re located in the Mediterranean, between the south of Italy and the North African coast and they are absolutely stunning.

There is a wide variety of things to do in Malta. There are historic temples dating back thousands of years, beautiful gardens overlooking the harbour, exciting hiking trails full of historical landmarks, beautiful beaches, and so much more.
The historical city of Rabat is well worth a visit and Games of Thrones fans will recognise Mdina from the famous franchise. I also highly recommend taking a ferry to Gozo. Once you dock, you can either jump on the hop-on-hop-off bus and tour the island’s top sights in a day or stay longer and see Gozo in more depth. It’s just as beautiful as mainland Malta – and just as historic too! The temples there are even older and even more magnificent.

Malta is also one of the best year-round destinations in Europe. The temperature rarely drops below 18°C (we visited in December and that was the standard daytime temperature), so it’s a great place to visit any time of year. The Christmas celebrations feel pretty strange when you’re standing there in a T-shirt and shorts though!

Overall, Malta is a fantastic destination to visit in 2024 in Europe. You can enjoy this little island all year round, and have a great time regardless of whether you prefer sunbathing or sightseeing.

If you are looking for a warm destination to visit in 2024, Marbella is an excellent choice. This beautiful town near Malaga offers many things, from good beaches and a lively atmosphere to delicious food and fantastic day trips. In addition to this, Marbella is one of the best places to enjoy the sunshine all year round. Its microclimate makes winters mild and summers warm but not excessively warm.

On a trip to Marbella, there are a few things you don’t want to miss. The first is its historic centre, known for its cobbled streets and white-painted buildings. Not only is it picturesque, but it is the best place to see monuments like Marbella Castle. Another popular spot that needs to be included in any Marbella itinerary is Puerto Banús, one of the most luxurious ports in Spain. It is the perfect place for those who enjoy shopping but also a great place to book a sunset cruise. If you plan to stay in Marbella longer than a weekend, it is also worth going on excursions. Some of the most popular day trips from Marbella are Ronda, an inland whitewashed town with incredible wineries, and Gibraltar, famous for its monkeys. Last but not least, don’t leave Marbella without visiting its beaches. The most beautiful beach is Cabopino, which has a short hiking trail that can be done with kids in winter when it isn’t too hot

Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2024: Naples, Italy

napoli

>> Book your accommodation in Napoli

Known for its biggest natural landmark, Mount Vesuvius, Naples and its surroundings are legendary from documentaries to poems to written ancient texts. If you want to dive into culinary and archeological history, Naples is the place to visit in 2024.

The southern Italian metropolis is also known as the birthplace of pizza and Tarantella Music. The lively town with good mood and sunshine, however, has a darker ancient history. A popular settlement since Roman times, it witnessed the distraction of nearby Pompeii, Boscoreale, Oplontis, and Herculaneum thanks to the eruption on Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Sheer luck spared Naples from destruction.

Venture out into the underground tunnels and tombs of ancient times, Napoli Sotterranea (Naples Underground) is one of the most visited locations in the city.

Naples is also home to many museums like Naples National Archaeological Museum, San Severo Chapel Museum, Galleria Borbonica, or the Art and Science Museum (MUSA) hosting a unique collection of wax models.

The historical center is a UNESCO site, comprising landmarks such as Duomo di Napoli, the Castel Nuovo, the Galleria Umberto I, The Naples Opera House, the Royal Palace, Castle dell’Ovo (Ovo’s Castle) with a stunning view of the bay and volcano. The street art and murals on Naples’ streets are also creating an unique atmosphere.

If you are tired of the hustle and bustle of the city, take a break in Capodimonte Museum and Park, or one of the other parks of the city. If you prefer to be more active, go on a hiking adventure climbing up to Mount Vesuvius.

Naples is an ideal hub to visit southern Italy, check out Amalfi coast, visit some historical sites, or just enjoy some culinary delights (pizza, pasta, pepperoni! and some great seafoods, and wines).

The city is connected to rest of Italy and other countries by an international airport, highspeed trains, a highway, and a cruise and ferries port. Everyone can pick and choose how to get here based on preferences and budget.
