22 Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2022

Another year full of uncertainties is about to end. The availability of vaccines and the use of the Green Certificate for both crossing borders and participating in activities have made traveling within Europe possible in 2021.

With Europe opening to third-party countries, as well, it was starting to look quite “normal” on the Old Continent. Looking forward to 2022, we can’t help but feel more optimistic than in the past year and a half.

With that said, it’s time for our annual recommendation list. Read on to find out the top destinations in Europe to visit in 2022, as shared by fellow travel bloggers.

Note: The LooknWalk team strongly recommends checking local restrictions and recommendations before traveling.

Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2022: Istria, Croatia

Croatia Rovinj

>>book your accommodation in Rovinj

Istria in Croatia is a brilliant trip for a wonderful vacation in Europe. This picturesque peninsula offers a wide range of lovely coastal towns, fabulous beaches, and plenty of opportunities for unforgettable outdoor activities.

The three best places to visit in this area include the colorful harbor town of Rovinj, the nature park Cape Kamenjak with its numerous beaches, and, as an insider tip, the beautiful little mountain villages in the hinterland of Istria.

If you happen to be a vegan (or prefer to eat plant-based), you will also find a choice of vegan restaurants in Istria, especially in the larger towns. Try the Istrian pasta with truffles, which is served in many taverns around.
The best weather in Istria is between May and October. At this time of year, you can count on pleasant temperatures, lots of sun, and even swimming weather.

The best way to get to Istria is by plane to Pula or Rijeka and then by public bus or rental car. If you plan to be a digital nomad, Croatia is the right place for you, because a Croatian residence permit (Digital Nomad Visa) is offered since 2020!

Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2022: Oslo, Norway

norway oslo

>>book your accommodation in Oslo

If you’re looking for somewhere beautiful to travel to, look no further than Oslo in Norway. This wonderful city manages to combine Scandinavian culture with modern living. There are the pretty older districts and more modern buildings, like the Opera House, all set to the backdrop of the surrounding mountains and water.

Even better, everyone speaks impeccable English, and they are so helpful- it’s almost surreal to be able to travel to a different country and not worry about the language.

Oslo is easily reached by plane from most countries (it’s only a 2-hour flight from London), plus it’s just over the Swedish border, so if you’re driving it’s not too far to go. If you’re going campervanning in Norway, it’s a great place to stop for a day or two to get you into the Norwegian spirit and learn more about their culture.

It’s tough to know when the best time to visit is as it’s all so beautiful, but summer is probably best as the weather is warmer and there’s more sunlight, so you have more time to enjoy yourself.

One outstanding thing to do in Oslo is taking a boat trip down Oslofjord- you won’t believe the scenery, especially if you go near sunset. You can also walk right up onto the roof of the Oslo Opera House- definitely recommend doing this on a clear day so you can enjoy the views of the city from there. Whilst you’re there, don’t miss the sauna at KOK- it’s a floating sauna and the brave (or foolish!) are encouraged to take a dip in the fjord to cool down!

Oslo is fairly vegan friendly- you can find Nordvegan and also RAW in the city, plus many other restaurants have options for you.

Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2022: Winchester, England

winchester

>>book your accommodation in Winchester

Winchester is one of the oldest cities in England and it has everything you’d expect from a historic city: pretty cobbled streets, boutique shops, and one of the most famous cathedrals in the UK.

Winchester is easily reached by train or car. Taking the train is probably easier from London as the traffic can be bad. If you have your own vehicle and plan to motorcycle in the UK, using the Park and Ride system is a great idea, as parking in the center is limited.

The weather is generally best in the summer, but my favorite time to visit is during December when the famous Christmas market is on.

Some of the best things to do in Winchester include visiting Winchester Cathedral, where Jane Austen is buried. You can see her stone and also see one of the oldest bibles in the world!

A trip to Winchester Planetarium offers a lovely chance to lie back and enjoy learning about the stars and planets.
And why not, go shopping. Winchester has some amazing shops on and around the high street, and you can happily pass several hours browsing around (I certainly can anyway!)

Winchester is very vegan friendly and lots of places have options for you. Rawberry is a popular option.

Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2022: Tenerife Spain

Tenerife

>>book your accommodation in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Tenerife is a top European destination to visit in 2022 and it should be on anyone’s list!

It’s part of the Canary Islands, which are owned by Spain but off the coast of Africa. Tenerife is unique in that the landscape is so vast, considering it’s a small island.

In Tenerife, you can find amazing beaches with turquoise blue water, forests as you head more inland, and even volcanic fields as you drive through the Teide National Park.

If you want city life, you can spend more time in Santa Cruz, or if you want to be a beach bum, you can hang out in Puerto de la Cruz or Costa Adeje.

The weather is great all year round, even if the sea may be a bit cold for swimming in winter.

Tenerife is also full of young people and digital nomads escaping the winter in Europe and living life on this carefree island.

The best way to see Tenerife is hands down exploring on your own via car or motorcycle. The public transportation is great, but with your own vehicle, you can beach hop and see so much more!

Tenerife is served by two airports and two ports, so getting here is not hard no matter what your preferred means of transportation is.

Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2022: Alicante, Spain

alicante

>>book your accommodation in Alicante

Alicante is one of the top European destinations to visit in 2022. The ‘city of light’ on Spain’s Mediterranean coast is a beautifully laid back and interesting place to be. Sandy beaches, water sports, and wonderful cuisine are just some of the great points Alicante has to offer.

The international airport is located within easy reach some 10 minutes away by bus. Most people travel to Costa Blanca for a holiday and then visit Alicante for the day, however, the city itself has so much to offer it’s definitely worth staying here. With hot sunny summers and a mild winter, this is the perfect destination to visit any time of year.

Alicante has a wealth of ancient history, Medieval Santa Barbara castle overlooking the port or the Roman archaeological site of Lucentum are cool examples. Get a boat over to Tabarca Island for the best scuba diving in Europe, charter a yacht to sail the serene waters, have fun on a jet ski (or kiteboard when it’s windy), and just swim in the clear warm sea. The seafront marina is the place to go for nightlife, classy beach clubs with pools and chill-outs overlooking the bay, the Costa Blanca Casino, and lots of great restaurants to choose from.

Fresh seafood and Spain’s famous dish, saffron rice paella, are favorites on every menu. Alicante’s old town is full of ‘tapas bars’ where you can enjoy an immense array of appetizers from a slice of typical Spanish omelet or a plate of cured ham with cheese, to all kinds of gourmet tasters. There are lots of vegan options available too. Accompany your meal with wine from the local vineyards.

Plenty of low-cost carriers serve Alicante’s airport, so getting here is incredibly easy. You may also choose to travel by land (train, bus, or rental car).

Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2022: Dundee, Scotland

Dundee

>>book your accommodation in Dundee

Just over an hour from Edinburgh lies Dundee, Scotland’s City of Discovery. Already a diverse destination, future plans include the opening of the Eden Project in 2024, ensuring it will only get better.

There is so much in a small area, making it perfect for a weekend stay or a longer break. Drop your bags at one of the city center hotels and you’re surrounded by great food and drink. Take a short walk and you’re at the recently regenerated waterfront featuring two outstanding attractions: the stunning V&A Museum (the only one outwith London), and its neighbor, the RSS Discovery, which Captain Scott sailed on his Antarctic expedition.

As the UK’s only UNESCO City of Design, art is everywhere, but the McManus Galleries is full of history and culture and is free to visit.

Dundee has a small airport with flights to/from Belfast City or London City airports, and excellent train and bus links. As Scotland’s sunniest city, I’d recommend a visit in summer, but take a warm layer and a brolly just in case!

Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2022: Lisbon, Portugal

lisbon

>>book your accommodation in Lisbon

Lisbon, Portugal is easily one of the best destinations to visit in Europe in 2022. It’s a big city with a small-town feel since it is filled with charming cobblestone streets, vintage trolleys, vibrant apartment buildings, local bakeries that whip up fresh pastel de nata, and scenic overlooks that offer stunning panoramas of the surrounding ocean.

So, after arriving at Lisbon’s international airport, you can check out some of the best things to do in Lisbon. Start by exploring the labyrinth of cobblestone alleys that make up the Alfama neighborhood. You’ll get bonus points if you use the historic, tram 28E to get here since the ride is truly stunning. However, trams in general are just a great way to get around the city.

Next, stop for some fresh pastels de nata (a local egg custard tart) at Antiga Confeitaria de Belém (they’ve been making them since the 1800s) before exploring the majesty of the historic Mosteiro dos Jerónimos in Belem. You can also check out the gorgeous Belem tower while you’re here before visiting the Museu Nacional do Azulejo and admiring some of the beautiful hand-painted tiles that Lisbon is famous for.

If you can, try to visit between March and May or between September and October. Not only is the weather warm – without being oppressively hot and humid like in the summer – but it’s the off-season so hotels are much cheaper and there are fewer tourists in the city. All in all, though, the city has a relatively mild climate since it sits right on the ocean. Therefore, highs typically don’t exceed 35C in the summer, and winter lows don’t fall below 15C.

Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2022: Dublin, Ireland

dublin castle

>>book your accommodation in Dublin

A rich history with friendly locals among walkable cobblestone streets makes Dublin a wonderful place to visit in Europe. There are plenty of things to do in Dublin that make it one of the best European destinations in 2022.

Most people arrive in Dublin by plane. The city is very easy to get around via public transportation, taxi, or shared ride services. Since Ireland is in the European Union (EU), digital nomads can apply for the EU digital nomad’s visa.

The capital city of Ireland has deep roots in the history of the country. Get a glimpse into the culture by visiting some of the historic buildings. Dublin Castle towers over the city while Trinity College’s campus is a breathtaking city break. On the other side of the city, you can go shopping along the River Liffey. Cross over the Ha’Penny bridge – named for the original cost of crossing – a halfpenny. It’s one of my favorite places in the city and I love seeing it at sunset.

While Dublin is a great city to visit all year, I particularly love it in the spring. The city comes alive in March for St. Patrick’s Day and stays cheery for the rest of the season. The weather also starts to warm in spring, so all you’ll need is a jacket!

While Dublin typically isn’t regarded as a foodie city, there are plenty of restaurants and pubs that put local ingredients in the heart of their menu. A great place to eat is The Church – a 17th-century church-turned-pub that features traditional Irish fare (including vegetarian options), and live music!

It’s incredibly easy to get to Dublin on a flight from plenty international destinations. You may also catch a ferry from other European ports.

Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2022: Porto, Portugal

porto

>>book your accommodation in Porto

Porto is a beautiful city in Portugal with a lot of things to do and see.

The city is very walkable, and you can get to most places on foot. There are also trams and buses if you’re feeling too lazy to walk.

During summer this area is very warm and humid and in winter it can get quite chilly. That said, try to visit between June and September for the best weather.

The city is fantastic for digital nomads with a lot of coworking spaces and amenities for remote workers.
Of course, Porto has an international airport , so it’s well connected to Europe, the rest of Portugal, and the world.

Porto is known for its delicious food and although you might have some trouble finding vegan options in mainstream restaurants there are more and more vegan options popping up all over the city. Make sure to check out the Dom Luis Bridge, Vila Nova de Gaia which is Porto’s wine neighborhood and. of course, the famous blue churches.

The city of York in England is a fascinating place. There are lots of things to do in York https://getlost.blog/things-to-do-in-york/ , which make it worthy of a spot on your 2022 bucket list.

Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2022: Paris, France

paris

>>book your accommodation in Paris

One of the top reasons to make Paris a must-visit destination in Europe is the delicious Parisian foods and desserts. Having a meal, snack, or even just a beverage seated at a little round table on the sidewalk is one of the quintessential Parisian experiences.

Parisians spend lots of time sitting outdoors at neighborhood cafes, and outdoors in general. Apartments are small. So, the green spaces like the Tuileries and Luxembourg Gardens offer beautiful settings to take a break and enjoy the flowers, fountains, history, and art.

Paris houses the most visited art museum in the world, the Louvre, but the city itself is like one big museum. Historical sites pepper every neighborhood, and a walk along the Seine can fulfill an entire attraction checklist including Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower.

Getting to Paris is extremely easy. Served by several airport, it receives flights from across the world. It’s also very well connected by land to the rest of Europe, so you might want to consider embarking on a romantic overnight train ride.

Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2022: Plovdiv, Bulgaria

plovdiv

>>book your accommodation in Plovdiv

Plovdiv is arguably the most worthwhile city to visit in Bulgaria. Its history can be traced to over 8000 years ago making it one of the oldest populated cities in the world. Multiple ancient monuments from different epochs are still well-preserved earning Plovdiv the title European Capital of Culture for 2019.

If you are looking for cultural and historical landmarks, visit the Old Town. It’s a beautiful part of the city, which is an architectural reserve of old traditional houses, cobbled streets, houses turned into museums, galleries, and medieval ruins.

Another famous landmark is the Roman Amphitheatre where you can enjoy the performances of the Plovdiv Opera in the remains of the ancient structure.

Even if you are looking for a bit of an outdoor adventure, Plovdiv is situated near some of the most beautiful mountains in Bulgaria, the Rhodopes, making it a great starting point for hiking.

But the real reason for Plovdiv’s increasing popularity is the Kapana (the Trap) district. It’s an area that used to be dominated by abandoned buildings, and it has been undergoing a constant transformation in the past few years. Now it is an art pedestrian zone full of restaurants, bars, galleries, and shops.

So, when is the best time to visit? Bulgaria generally has hot summers and cold winters. Visitors can enjoy Plovdiv all year round, but late summer or late spring are best as the temperatures could get very high during the summer months and the city gets very busy. Many carriers fly there but flying to Sofia and taking a train or a bus to Plovdiv is also an option.

brno

>>book your accommodation in Brno

Brno is a beautiful city in South Moravia, a wonderful alternative to the way too touristy Prague. Located just two hours away from the Czech capital, Brno is the capital of South Moravia. Brno is a great city, with a fantastic gastro and coffee scene. There are plenty of restaurants that cater to all types of diets, vegan and vegetarian places, but also traditional beer houses that serve local Czech food.

Brno is not a big city, which makes it easy to explore on foot. The city is overlooked by a castle built on top of a hill, overlooking the grounds around it. Špilberk Castle is a must-see, even if you only have one day in Brno.

The city center is quite compact, which makes all the touristic attractions very close to each other. Brno is home to the second-largest underground ossuary in Europe, holding the remains of around 50,000 people. Being a city of legends, everywhere you go in Brno you will find something intriguing. The old city hall for example is home to three different tales: the dragon of Brno, the crooked spire on the façade, and the Brno Wheel. If you want to find them, you must visit Brno!

To get to Brno, first you need to fly to Prague; once in the capital, catch a train to Brno.

Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2022: Brussels, Belgium

brussels

>>book your accommodation in Brussels

Brussels is one of the best places to visit in Europe in 2022. Apart from some great history, the city carries a certain lively atmosphere and the scent of chocolate. And who doesn’t like that?

There are many amazing architectural sites in Brussels that are worth visiting such as the Palais Royal and Brussels’ Notre Dame de Sablon. But one unmissable landmark is the Grand Place. If you visit in December, the area is transformed into a Christmas Market with colorful lights and plenty of shops for souvenirs, street food, beer, and gluhwein.
Visiting the city often calls for checking out its mascot – the peeing boy (Manneken Pis). It’s a very famous thing to see, but it is not the only peeing statue in Brussels. You could go look for Mannekin Pis’ little sister (Jeanneke Pis) and the peeing dog statue (Het Zinneke) while you walk around the city.

But the best part of visiting Brussels is the possibility to explore the country’s food culture. Don’t miss trying out a Belgian waffle, Belgian fries, or the famous mussels. And if you are a beer snob, you will love tasting as many beers as you can. There are plenty of craft beer shops and bars to choose from. Delirium Café and Mappa Mundo are two excellent places to try out different beers.

Brussels is very easily accessible by plane, car, or train and the public transport in the city is quite good, too. The weather can be a bit grey through most of the year, but any time is a good time to visit.

Honorable Mention – Destinations in Europe to Visit in 2022: Paphos, Cyprus

Paphos Cyprus

>>book your accommodation in Paphos City

Paphos is a beautiful city in Cyprus and there are loads to do there. Plus, the weather is amazing with high temperatures year-round, very rarely dropping below 8C, even in the colder months. The best time for weather would probably be June, as it’s warm and almost no rain during this month. What’s not to love?!

If you are in Cyprus already you can reach Paphos by bus, or taxi. Otherwise, you will need to get a flight to Paphos airport.

Some of the best things to do in Paphos include visiting the Tomb of the Kings, which is a large necropolis located about 2km north of Paphos harbor and also a UNESCO world heritage site.

Paphos Castle is an ancient castle, originally a fortress used to protect the port. It is surrounded by water so it’s aesthetically pleasing, and it’s said to be one of the most famous attractions in Paphos.

And don’t forget to stop by Coral Bay beach, which is absolutely stunning both in the winter and the summer.

The other good thing about Paphos is that it’s fairly vegan-friendly. The traditional Cypriot cuisine has some outstanding vegan foods, such as fasolada (beans soup), stuffed vegetables, or stuffed zucchini flowers. There are also plenty of vegan options for those who don’t mind choosing ethnic restaurants such as Italian, Indian, and even Japanese.
