London – scarce free wi-fi available

Or should I say…available but not working?

My colleagues were nice enough to warn me about how hard it is to get free wi-fi in London. And they were not kidding. At all. On the first night we were lucky enough to find a pub with working free wi-fi. But it didn’t last long. After less than an hour the connection went dead and it stayed dead.

The wi-fi at the hotel is not working either; apparently it wasn’t working in the entire area. Except, it was working and …well, I didn’t even bother to figure that one out at the reception desk.

We all know there’s free wi-fi in McDonald’s all over the world. Yes, there is. But it’s not working either. I could log on with my cell and even got on Yahoo Messenger but nothing else worked.

Oh yeah, Starbucks also has free wi-fi in every location. The one in London right near the Tower Bridge worked enough to allow me to post two tweets. That was it despite the fact that the account we had to create should have let us use the net for 15 minutes.

The wi-fi at another pub which had the “free wi-fi” sticker in the window wasn’t working either. Actually I couldn’t even find the network.

I didn’t really need internet in London since I was on vacation but it would have been nice to be able to at least post some updates for my friends.
