Indoor Activities for Couples

When it comes to celebrating an anniversary, couples often choose to travel to enjoy special moments together. Others rejoice in a good old restaurant and movie date; while some are pretty happy with movies and chilling out at home.

This is an article for all of you. No matter what you prefer to do on a special day, chances are, sometimes that doesn’t work, and you end up having to improvise and plan a romantic indoor activity.

That’s why, I’ve asked fellow travel bloggers to share what they do when they cannot leave the house but want to do enjoy quality time with their romantic partner.

Indoor Activities for Couples: Cooking together

couple cooking together

There’s so much to love about being able to cook in the kitchen with your partner. It’s a powerful way to create some of the best memories of your life together because cooking engages many senses at once.

Being adventurous in the kitchen and trying new dishes together can be an enjoyable bonding experience as you learn more about each other’s tastes. Even if the meal ends up tasting really bad or a complete failure, it can always be remembered as a hilarious story you were part of together and can laugh about for years to come.

Sharing the load of cooking every day can form part of working towards your bigger dreams together. If your dream is to buy a house one day or travel the world side by side, eating at home instead of eating out can help you to save money to put towards those dreams.

Take the initiative to enhance your next meal together by adding some wine, candles and flowers to the table. Then top it off with some romantic music in the background. A little effort to make mealtime extra special goes a long way to creating and living a beautiful life together.

Indoor Activities for Couples: Yoga for Couples

yoga for couples

If you like yoga, you should definitely consider doing a session with your partner. Believe it or not, it can be really beneficial for your relationship.

You can start with easy and simple practices involving breathing exercises, meditation holding hands, or writing and sharing positive thinking. Basic yoga poses for couples include the chair pose, boat pose and sideways warrior pose. You’re guaranteed to have a lot of fun doing those.

Couples yoga is a great thing to do indoors. You’ll learn that your partner is there to support you and help you achieve a shared aim. For some poses you’ll have to entirely rely and trust the one you love. You don’t have to be an experienced yogi to make enjoy a great couple yoga session. You just need to be involved, creative and to open your heart.

If you enjoy doing couple yoga at home, you could then go on a yoga retreat for couples to improve your skills. You’ll learn to reconnect and to listen to each other. This kind of holidays is also a great moment to share experiences and discover new couple activities.

Indoor Activities for Couples: Playing board games

board games

We love to travel, and we love board games. So, it should come as no surprise that we built up a pretty impressive selection of travel board games over time. These are games that are small and portable. That being said, we have loads of other board games at home that get played a lot. They just don’t go with us when we travel because they are large and difficult to carry. Many of them are even travel themed! You will find this a recurring concept because many designers are inspired by places across the world.

When we are indoors, we play as many as we can, as often as we can. In fact, we pick out our game of the day based on our mood. Light games when we feel less focused and larger campaigns for when we want something challenging. Paired with a good glass of wine, of course!

Indoor Activities for Couples: Destination thematic activity

a dat at the beach...indoors

We are always thinking of places where we could go or reminisce about where we have just come back from. Thankfully, we can feed this need for new activities by planning a thematic day at home with your loved one.

For example, if you are in love with the Greek seaside, and have some “props” handy, then there you have it: a day at the beach (all from the comfort of your home).

The room can be transformed into a cool, relaxed beach with just a few adjustments. Use your beach towels and maybe parts of your sofa (like in our case) or put them directly on the floor. If you have a beach umbrella, open that one up and get excited by only looking at it.

Dust off those souvenirs and place some seashells around on the floor and try to be careful not to step on them. You might even have sand on your floor anyway if you are using the beach bag. Place all your pictures from the last trip there pretty close to your sunbed.

There are many places from where you can stream eight or ten hours of sounds from the sea. Just listen to the waves, the wind, the nice little birdies in the trees. Let some light in from outside, to enjoy the sunshine. Just close your eyes, lay down, and enjoy the feeling of sunbathing while listening to the waves.

If you care for some drinks, you can enjoy a fresh-squeezed lemonade or some fruit juices, to get you filled up with all the vitamins you need. If you get hungry, enjoy a fresh salad with a Greek spin.

Sky is the limit with this activity, so why not try to touch it?

Indoor Activities for Couples: Design a photo book together

phoot book

If you’re anything like me, the time you’re not traveling is typically filled with thinking about travel – either planning upcoming trips or reminiscing on previous adventures. One way to immortalize adventures with your significant other is to design a photo book together and have it printed (there’s something so magical about having hard copies of a photo book you can flip through rather than scroll!).

Spend a Saturday afternoon or a handful of evenings going through all your photos, adding those beautiful sunset shots, but also those funny moments you capture when your adventure buddy isn’t looking (like after an exhausting hike or in the middle of taking a big bite). Add text with references to inside jokes and misadventures (meanwhile laughing about all those times you got lost or that terrible hostel you accidentally booked).

Creating your shared photo book is half the fun. When it’s finished, get it printed and keep it on your coffee table or in a prominent place on your bookshelf. You’ll find yourself flipping through a couple pages whenever it catches your eye, and immediately you’ll both be brought back to that adventure.

Indoor Activities for Couples: Dance your love away

We’ve been taking Argentine tango lessons for more than two years now (n.a. started in Sep 2017) which makes us an “advanced” couple.

And while we totally enjoy going to milongas (tango parties), sometimes all we want to do is dance in the comfort of our own home.

We’ve had to move furniture out of the way, put the camera on a tripod (with extension) to get the best angle to film our endeavors but nothing is too much when you have a passion and need to live it.

We take turns choosing the music. And while I’ve been DJ-ing at milongas, but there’s something special about choosing the most romantic Argentine tangos to dance to in the intimacy of our home, whether we do it on an anniversary, for one of our birthdays, or just because.

But you don’t need to have taken dancing classes before to dance together at home. Just put on your favorite slow songs, embrace each other, and go with the flow.

Indoor Activities for Couples: Thematic movie night

watching a movie

As we discovered ourselves over the years as a couple, we came to know there are two interests that we share 100%: travel & watching good light-hearted movies.

So, while we try to travel as much as possible, on the days when we are not able to, we often love to celebrate “movie nights” indoor.

The list is quite generic, but it includes a lot of travel related movies to satisfy our wanderlust when we are at home. That’s why we do some research beforehand and have a handy list of movies that we can pick from depending on the mood of the day. To spice it up, we accompany our movies with snacks that we cook together in the evening!

Since we enjoy watching movies together, this activity has strengthened our bond over the years. And the movie nights are something we cherish a lot.

Some of the wonderful movies that we have stumbled upon during our movie nights, totally loved are:

Indoor Activities for Couples: Travel through music

playing a record

Traveling is something you do with all your senses. And most of us find it easy to close our eyes and see a place, or taste a dish, but would you try to hear the music of that place? And I don’t mean how that place sounds like, because I wouldn’t want to hear the traffic sounds in Paris or Rome, but just a song to remind you of that place.

This can turn out to be an interesting activity for a couples evening together. Let all your concerns out of your world, set aside some time for the two of you, and just travel through music.

Of course, tailor the playlist to your taste and places you want to “visit”. Here is just an example to get you going:

Indoor Activities for Couples: create videos from old travels

editing video

As a traveling couple, we understand the desire to travel full time. Even when that isn’t possible, there are still so many activities couples can do indoors together. One of our favorite activities is to create videos from our old travels.

Creating videos from old travels has so many benefits. Not only does it allows you to go back and relive the experiences that you shared together but it can also help you to remember so many great things about the trip.

Making the videos does not have to be a full-blown editorial experience either, so do not be overwhelmed by the thought of the process. Putting your travel related videos together can be as easy as putting some pictures into a slide show and setting music to it. If you are feeling more ambitious, do a voiceover where you talk about your experiences or tell a story from your travels in your video. Either way, you are sure to have a good time and create a lasting memory together.
