Day 27 prompt is here: Tell us about a time you celebrated a holiday abroad?

The longest I’ve been away so far was 3 weeks. Hardly can call it “long term travel”. Sigh. And I’ve made a point to NOT travel over the holidays. We all know it: it’s expensive , it’s crowded, it’s not worth it.

I have had the stupid idea to celebrate New Year’s Eve in Budapest. 2012-2013. Bad bad bad idea. First off, the “friends” we went with apparently made it a point to check out all bars and clubs in Budapest, while we would not. I am not a fan of drinking …let alone in overpriced locations.

Secondly, it was cold coldy cold. Well, yes, December in Europe is not exactly t-shirt weather, I should know, but damn it, it was so cold we barely lasted two hours on Chain Bridge. And there were no spectacular fireworks.

All in all, we did visit the Parliament when it was still free. So yay.

In 2013, we ended up arriving in Italy on September 8, which is the feast of Virgin Mary in all Catholic countries. We had a blast at a concert and enjoyed wonderful fireworks (don’t ask me where the photos are…)

I had the brilliant idea to spend Easter in a Catholic country. Thankfully, I soon realized the both Catholic and Orthodox Easter would fall on the same in 2014 so we stayed at home. Problem solved.

I would , however, want to spend Easter in Greece. It’s just… well, I love Greece, so this only seems natural to enjoy a special celebration on an island (lately I’ve fallen for Chefalonia , thanks to Captain Corelli’s Mandolin – the book). Easter is the most important Orthodox holiday and in Greece it’s totally amazing , due to the traditions.
