#DoYouIndie -Options Over Possesions

I am , again, participating in the Indie Challenge hosted by Bootsnall. Just like last year, I’d be posting an article a day, based on the question / challenge of that day.

Options over possessions

QUESTION:
How is having experiences better than having possessions?

CHALLENGE: Options over possessions is one of our Indie Travel Manifesto values. So we are giving you some homework today. Go through your stuff and pick out 3 items to give away/donate. They can be clothes, dvds, a stuffed toy, anything that can be useful to someone else. Photo the 3 items you’re giving away and write about this experience.
How do you feel giving away your stuff? What has this taught you about what you can/can’t live without? Have you learned anything from this experience?

This is one of my favorite values from the Indie Travel Manifesto. I am part of a family – mom’s side of it – who pretty much “hordes” everything. And I mean everything that may at some distant point in the future be used again.

On the other hand, I took from dad and “hording” hasn’t stuck. I don’t let go of my electronics that easily – unless they are outdated or broken – but I certainly get rid of everything else.

We have a private joke in house: my husband has more shoes and clothes than I do! Seriously.

Every quarter I get into the habit of cleaning my kitchen and closet. That means,I throw away what I cannot donate / give away and what can still be used is packed and sent to my parents.

The other day I threw out an old pot. I got it during a camping trip because I went unprepared but it doesn’t serve any purpose and it is already showing time. Off it went to the trash.

Before that, I threw in the trash bin a pair of old trousers. I used them in the house but they ripped so served no one any purpose.

Those two were not photo-worthy, by the way. Plus they took the one way to the trash bin.

One of our old desktops is now my parents’ computer. I gifted that for Christmas last year.

I will be skipping the challenge today but I do want to do another round of cleaning my kitchen before the Holidays. So if I remember, photos will be posted.
