Best Destinations for Weekend Trips in Europe

Ah, the (long) weekend! A quick getaway can do wonders for your health and mood!

Whether you just want to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life, take a romantic trip with your beau, or have some fun with your friends, weekend trips in Europe are exactly what you’ve been looking for.

We certainly have taken advantage of many such escapes: from spending my birthday in Budapest, to enjoying a week of tango and sightseeing in Sibiu, and splurging at a 4-star hotel in Oradea, we aren’t strangers to wonderful short trips in Europe.

And with so many gorgeous places to explore on the Old Continent, it can be hard to choose where to go (first). With that in mind, in this article, we’re sharing the best weekend trips in Europe, no matter your budget or preferences.

Vienna, Austria

Vienna, the capital city of Austria, having existed since Roman times, is a beautiful city filled with architectural treasures and culture.

Served by train stations, bus stops, highways, and an international airport, it is an ideal destination for a weekend trip or a short holiday.

With average winter temperatures around 4C (39F) and average summer temperatures around 24C (75F), Vienna is a nice place to visit any time of the year.

In winter, visit some of Europe’s most celebrated Christmas Markets; and in summer, hang around the amusement park of Prater, or sit at one of the many caffes and bars. If you are a coffee snob (like us), you’ll love Austria’s a deep-rooted coffee and cake culture.

Other activities worth mentioning are Danube River rides, visiting the majestic Schönbrunn Palace and Gardens, walking in Stadpark, strolling around the open market of Naschmarkt or exploring one of the awesome museums Vienna has to offer. Personal preferences include the Globe Museum, the Papyrus Museum, and the Museum of Science and Technology.

If you have time, you can partake in one of the many indoor and outdoor festivals and events the city is known for, or even attend a concert in Vienna’s Philharmonic Concert Hall (Wiener Philharmoniker.). Bonus points if you grab some seats at the Christmas or New Year’s concerts.

Budapest, Hungary

The other capital of the Austro-Hungarian empire, now capital of Hungary, Budapest literally tells the tale of two cities. Being well served by an airport, several highways, and trains stations, it’s the main transport hub in Central – Easten Europe and an ideal choice for a weekend trip in Europe.

Being so close to Vienna you can cover both capitals in a (long) weekend trip. Budapest is a great day trip destination from Vienna (or vice versa).

With winter average temperatures of 0 C (31 F) and 21.5 C (70.5 F) during summer (although blistering hot days are quite normal in summer), Budapest is a lovely option whether you prefer to spend time indoors or outdoors.

Known for its thermal baths, winter days become balmier if you decide to take a dip. Or downright indulge with some spa treatments. For the food lovers, Budapest is a delight, being an interesting mix, of European, Middle East, and Far East blend, with many delightful dishes to try out.

A fan of Budapest in winter ? The city has some great winter activities, including skating the largest outdoor skating rink in Europe, Varosligeti Mujegpalya. Also, you can visit one of the many Christmas Markets. While similar to the ones in Vienna, you’ll notice the local differences when it comes to the spices used in the mulled wine and the assortment of traditional foods.

For summer lovers, Budapest offers many bike trails, hiking trails, and some stunning hillside views. You can also enjoy the unique Children Railway and cogwheel tram, as well as an ancient Roman settlement (Aquincum).

Architecture wise Budapest is home to a 13th-century castle including, the breathtaking Fisherman’s Bastion with gorgeous views of the Danube and Pst, lovely Vajdahunyad Castle, which started life in cardboard, the huge Heroes Square, the Gothic style Parliament building on the river Danube, many incredible churches, cathedrals, and domes, and neo-renaissance buildings such as the National Opera House. Most important styles present are baroque, art nouveau, Bauhaus, and socialist classicism.

Other sights worth mentioning are the many museums, the Grand Central Market, different lookouts, and Margitsziget.
Budapest is also host to many festivals, among which the Sighet Fest, perhaps, the most well-known one and a wonderful choice for a quick weekend trip in Europe.

Prague, Czechia

Another famous capital of Europe and an important city in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Prague, the capital city of the Czeck Republic, is a great weekend and short trip destination.

It’s been an important economic, cultural, and political hub since Roman times. As expected, Prague is also home to popular Christmas Markets. The most popular is held in the Old Town, a UNESCO heritage site, where you can admire medieval architecture.

With an average of –1 C (30 F) in winter, just make sure to pack layers. And if you need respite from the heat, the summer temperature averages 17 C (63F).

The Black Theater and its performing pantomimes, combined with the beer culture, and the many bars provide excellent reasons for a great weekend getaway destination. In addition, don’t mis out on tasting your way through the local cuisine.

Some of the most important landmarks to check out include the Prague Castle, the largest castle complex in the world being home to St.Vitus Catherdral, the Old Royal Palace and the Goldane Lane, the Charles Bridge; the Old City center with the old Town Hall and its unique Astronomical Clock, St. Nicholas Church, Vyšehrad, the historical fort, the National Museum, the Petřín Hill Observation Tower offering an amazing panoramic view of the city, and many more.

Bratislava, Slovakia

The city where Hungarian kings and queens were crowned, Bratislava is yet another gem in the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. The capital of Slovakia is a smaller version of Prague, with a medieval city center, a towering castle and culinary and beer culture.

Art and architecture are present as well, from German to Austrian classical influences to socialist modernism, you can find everything in between.

Walk around the old Castle or pass by Michael’s Gate, delve into the local cuisine in one of the many restaurants and bars in the Old Town, try out some local beers or delicacies like byndzone halušky (dumplings with sheep cheese) or trdelnik (a sweet chimney cake).

The Old City center is not too large so you can quickly get around. From the things you can visit we can mention: visit the Bratislava City Museum located in the old Town Hall, walk across the new bridge to go up in the UFO tower for a panoramic lookout, the National Teather, explore St. Martin’s Cathedral, or the fairytale like Blue Church.

Take a boat ride on the Danube to Devin Castle, an impressive and well-preserved fortress dating back to mid-800s. Or you can enjoy a relaxing time at Čunovo Water Park.

Art and street art is present, remarkable being many of the graffities and murals, or the statues garnishing the capital, like Cumi (Man at Work Statue). Another interesting location is the Primatial Palace known for its Hall of Mirrors and Peace of Pressburg painting.

With an average of 1C (33 F) during winter and 20C (69 F) during summer, Bratislava is a good destination year-round. Still, you’d probably want to visit in late spring, when it’s warm but not yet crowded.

Sibiu, Romania

Straddling the border between Transylvania and Walachia, the Romanian town of Sibiu captures Transylvania’s culture and myths, while being easily accessible from domestic and international destinations.

With an average of –1 C (30.5 F) during the winter and 20 C (68F) during the summer, this mountain medieval city is a cultural hotspot with plenty to do no matter when you visit.

From its historical center, a UNESCO site, paved with cobalt stones, to the Brukenthal Museum, the oldest in Romania, you can feel the historical and mythical charm of this city. Other must-see locations are the Passages of the Stairs, the 13th century Council Tower, Huet Square, Liar’s Bridge, Evangelical Cathedral, fortifications and defense towers, Sibiu Philharmonics. Like many other European cities Sibiu is home to a Christmas Market, the best-known and arguably one of the most beautiful in the country.

If you are more into the outdoors, you can visit one of the many close-by locations, like the Astra Village Museum to get into the look of the history of the region and understand traditional Transylvanian architecture and heritage.
If you are up for a ride, you can visit Avrig and its Brukenthal Palace, or take a trip and drive through one of Europe most amazing roads: the Transfagarasan Highway .

And if you are up for a day trip, you can easily get to Bran Castle (you remember Dracula?), Rasnov fortress and the neighboring town of Brasov. As a winter enthusiast you probably want to stop by Poiana Brasov, or Paltinis located 43 min from Sibiu, to get some well-deserved skiing or sledding time.

Berlin, Germany

The capital of Germany is renowned for being both a cultural and a political hub.

Known for its fashion, architecture, art and political history, Berlin is a good getaway for the curious traveler, even if they are only here for a weekend trip or short break.

Barlin is known both for its dark history, weird stand-offs, and cultural influences. It’s the place where worlds were separated and united and home to the ruins of the Great Berlin Wall, a border line between east and west. Another sign of unity of the German people is the Brandenburg Gate, sitting tall over the entrance to Unter den Linden boulevard.

You can stroll the halls of the Museum Island, a unique place, home of some of the best museums Germany has to offer, including the Neues Museum, Bode Museum, Pergamon Museum and DDR Museum showing the daily life of East Germans. Here you can also visit and admire the famous bust of Nefertitim 3000-year-old beauty, being on display at the Neues Museum.

Berlin, as well as other European cities, is well known and loved for its Christmas markets where you can enjoy some tasty wines and German cuisine. I guess no one needs an introduction to Knodel (dumplings) or the famous Apfelstreudel (apple strudel).

During winter Berlin is getting busy at the skating rinks, spas, and wellness spots. If you want to get away from the city buzz you could try to conquer the slides at Volkspark Friedrichshain Hill.

Between other must-see locations we can mention Checkpoint Charlie, the border between east and west, Berliner Philharmonie, known for its exceptional acoustics, Berlin State Opera, the Berlin State Ballet Holocaust Memorial, Berliner Dom, Potsdamer Platz, whit some fancy stores. Berlin is also home to many parks and squares, like Tiergarten (central park) and the Victory Column, Gendarmenmarkt, the Berlin Zoo and Aquarium, and its streets are famous for the street art present at every step. (most liked and visited the East Side Gallery, an open air gallery created on the old Berlin Wall).

Berlin also hosts fashion shows, film festivals, music festivals and the great New Year’s Eve fireworks show.

With an average of winter temperatures of 5C (41F) and an average of 23C (74F) in summer Berlin is a great place to visit year around.

Copenhagen, Denmark

A unique city with some unique features, Copenhagen, the capital city of Denmark, enjoys a great bicycling culture. So, riding a bike can be an eco-friendly way to discover this amazing city. With average winter temperatures around 1.5 C ( 35 F) and summer temperatures of 18 C (65 F), Copenhagen can be a good destination any time of the year for a weekend trip.
Copenhagen too has many outdoor spaces that become Christmas markets and the skating rinks are opening up expecting the adventures ones.

Known for its unique harbor district (Nyhavn) with colorful buildings, the Little Mermaid statue that inspired Hans Cristian Andersen to write its fairy tale, that later become a Disney Classic, and for its amazing and unusual Danish design, Copenhagen is a wonderful place to bike or walk around and bump into amazing stuff.

Visit the Opera House, or walk around Strøget, one of the longest pedestrian streets in Europe, or have fun in Tivoli Gardens, the world’s oldest amusement park; these are just some of the unique things to see and do that only Copenhagen can offer.

Many of the museums in Copenhagen offer free entrance on specific days, so be on the lookout for that if you are looking to save money. One the of the favorites is the National Museum of Denmakr where you can dive into the Viking lore and history.

Beside museums Copenhagen is home to some unique building and palaces such as The Round Tower, a observatory and library, The Royal Palace (Amalienborg Palace), Christiansborg Palace (home for the Danish Parliament), and Freetown Christiania, a unique partially governed and independent community.

For the culinary adventurers, Copenhagen won’t disappoint. Try some of the local delicacies such as smorrebrod, frikadeller, or risalamande.

Served by airport, train stations and highways, you can easily get to the city from neighboring countries, further away in Europe or from across the ocean.

Amsterdam, the Netherlands

The capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam is an intriguing destination and one of the biggest air hubs in the world. The city is connected by airport, highways and roads, and trains to the rest of the country, Europe, and overseas.

With cold weather in winter around –1C (30 F) to 5 C (41 F) and an average of 22 C (77F) in summer, Amsterdam may not be the hottest destination you can visit. Although don’t be fooled: the city has many things to offer year-round, regardless of how crappy the weather can be. Plus, on a quick weekend trip, it can be easier to ignore the weather.

Like many other cities in Europe around the Christmas season, Amsterdam as well is dressed in Christmas Markets, starting from early December. A fairyland completes with skating rinks, seasonal foods and drinks (the mini pankakes are great), ferries wheel, Christmas trees, and snow ball fights.

Like many of the cities in northern countries, Amsterdam has a great cycling culture, so cycling can be a good way to discover the city. And locals cycle regardless of how crappy the weather is (See a pattern here?). Otherwise, you can take a ride on the city’s many canals and wonder around in style.

Visit the museums and historical locations, such as Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum, a museum dedicated to art and history, Dam Square home to the Royal Palace, New Church and National Museum, Rembrandt House Museum, Anne Frank House, and NEMO Science Museum.

Walk around the Vondelpark or Jordaan District and explore the narrow streets and boutique shops or wonder at the sight offered by the A’DAM Lookout with Europe’s highest swing.

To slow down you can attend the Heineken Experience, an interactive tour of the brewery, or sit at one of the restaurants and caffes to enjoy a culinary experience.

Obviously, we can’t walk around Amsterdam and not motion the Red District, a tourist trap and not so enjoyed part of the town by the locals but with a significant historical significance.

Paris, France

The city of LOVE, the capital of France. A city with a long history of being occupied by many survived and flourished every time. An idyllic city with both a romantic and a reality face to it.

Easy to get to, being a great international airport hub, and home to the stations for the legendary high-speed train, the TGV, you can get to Paris in just a few hours from many European countries. Even though French highways are one of the most expensive in Europe, they are connecting the French capital to the rest of the country and Europe really well.

Its picturesque bridges and legendary landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, Louvre Museum, Arc de Triumph Notre-Dame Cathedral, Sainte-Chapelle make Paris a romantic destination, and also a loved place to be featured in many movies. Inspiring many artists and home to many great inventions, the artistic heritage of Paris is undeniable. You can enjoy and travel through time in the various museums the city has to offer, even if sometimes they are not cheap at all.

We should not forget about the wonderland of Disneyland, either, especially in wintertime.

Whether you take a boat ride on the Seine River or get to know the incredible and vast culinary legacy of Paris in one of the many restaurants and cafes, your great time is guaranteed. The Latin Quarter, the legendary Champs-Élysées and many of the great parks and squares like the Luxembourg Gardens, Artists’ Square (Place du Tertre) offers you an escape from reality.

The hilltop panoramic view from the Montmartre and Sacré-Cœur Basilica is breathtaking even more in the evening than during the day.

Beside the artistic legacy, Paris is the fashion capital of the world. Do not go too deep into your pockets!

With an average high between 7°C to 10°C (45°F to 50°F) and average low of 2°C to 5°C (36°F to 41°F) in winter months; and with an average high between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F) and average low of 11°C to 16°C (52°F to 61°F) in summer time, Paris is a year round weekend destination, imbibing the romantic heart.

Dublin, Ireland

Established around the 7th century by the Gales fallowed by the Vikings this historical settlement grew to be the largest city and the capital of Ireland.

With an average of 5.8 C (42.5 F) in winter and an average of 14 C (57 F) in summer, Dublin isn’t a tropical paradise, but the constant weather makes it a good year round weekend destination for those who are not the friendliest with high temperatures.

Having a reach cultural and historical heritage, Dublin is home to many great museums and historical sights, like the Little Museum, situated in a Gregorian house and showing the local history and culture, James Joyce Centre and the Dublin Writers Museum, Chester Beatty, Kilmainham Gaol Museum, Dublin CityGallery The Hugh Lane, National Museum of of Ireland Archeology, Trinity College Dublin, or for the more down to earth the Guinness Storehouse for some sinful earthly pleasures, a cold beer and a panoramic view.

We must not forget about Temple Bar District, for its nightlife and culinary adventure, Dublin Castle or St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Also, if you want to get away from the hustle and buzz take a silent break in Phoenix Park, one of Europe’s largest urban parks, or take a bay and coastal walk visiting Howth Cliffs Walk and the Bull Island Nature Reserve.

We can’t go to Ireland and not mention its folk and traditional music, a delightful sound of many pirate stories.

The city is served by an airport, and you can take numerous ferries from England to Ireland, and it’s served by two train stations and a road network connecting with the rest of the country.

Edinburgh, Scotland

Besides being the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh has a rich cultural and art history.

With an average winter temperature of 6C (42 F) and an average of 18 C (64 F) in summer Edinburgh is an awesome year around urban weekend destination, for people like me who don’t enjoy negative temperatures but want a change from seaside and tropical or Mediterranean destinations.

Hosting The Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the world’s largest arts festival in August, the Jazz & Blues Festival in July, Science Festival in April, etc .. you literally can find at least one great festival every month.

No matter if you are an outdoor lover, climbing the Calton Hill to enjoy the views, or visit monuments like National Monument, Nelson Monument, and Dugald Stewart Monument or you want to stroll down the Royal Mile and relax shopping on the cobblestoned paved street you can enjoy a lot of activities here.

You should also consider visiting the Edinburgh Castle, situated on one end of Royal Miles, visit Holyrood Palace and its gardens, the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland situated on the other end of Royal Miles.

Hike the summit of Arthur’s Seat, an extinct volcano, to take in the views of the city and further out, relax at Princes Street Gardens, or take day trips to the charming towns of Dean Village, Glenfinnan, Glencoe and Fort William and Loch Ness & Highlands.

Other must-see locations and experience we can mention are Dynamic Earth, an interactive science museum, Camera Obscura and World of Illusions Greyfriars Kirkyard, a historic cemetery, Scottish National Gallery, and get acquainted with The Scotch Whisky Experience, a pride national drink that conquered the world.

Edinburgh is connected to Europe, the rest of the world, and the rest of the country via an airport, train stations, and numerous highways, making it an easy destination to visit and a great hub.

Lisbon, Portugal

The capital of Portugal, and Europe’s westernmost capital city, the birthplace of Fado music, the vibrant capital of Lisbon is a great weekend destination.

Known for its awesome climate with an average of approximately 17 C (62), year-round, Lisbon and the region is well known for surfers and water sport enthusiasts. Don’t be fooled, take an umbrella with you, at least in the winter months, rain can form instantly without any warning.

Lisbon is well connected with the rest of the country and neighboring Spain with roads, highways, and high-speed trains. If you arrive from further out, the International Airport offers many flights from Europe and even overseas.
Besides its stunning historical architecture, and its unique ceramic tiles (azulejos) covering houses and building on the narrow streets, Lisbon’s location creates an unique landscape, being surrounded by hills, from where we can have a unique panoramic view.

An iconic landmark workhorse of the city are its well-known and photographed yellow trams. Tram 28, and the funiculars like Elevador da Glória and Elevador da Bica are the most famous though.

No matter if you stroll around Alfama District, the oldest one in Lisbon, or visit the medieval castle of São Jorge, history and culture will surround you. Maybe you prefer the ancient history or the contemporary locations, Belém District, home to Belém Tower, Jerónimos Monastery, and the Monument to the Discoveries, to Parque das Nações a modern district built for the 98 expo. Whichever your choice, a wonderful time is a guarantee.

Throw yourself into the buzzing nightlife of the Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré neighborhoods and try out Lisbon signature drink the Ginjinha, a sour cherry drink, sometime overlooked because of the porto wines. Accompanied it with some live performances of fado music.

For travelers who want to enjoy some sunshine and salt water, the Atlantic Ocean coastline entice the visitors with some stunning beaches like Praia dos Cavalos Pêreneco a hop from the city center or for those who want to venture further out, beaches like Praia da Costa da Caparica.

Lisbon won’t disappoint the museums lovers either, being home to National Museum of Ancient Art, Museu Calouste Gulbenkian, and Serralves Museum and Gardens, and more.

Porto, Portugal

Besides being the capital of Porto District in Portugal, it is also the second city of the country and home to the famous Porto Wine.

No matter if you like history, art or culinary adventures, Porto is a great place to go on a weekend escape. With an average winter temperature of 10 C (50 F) and summer average of 20 C (68 F) Porto is an ideal destination year around.
Most known for its Porto Wine, the region is a delight for the wine lover. Enjoy a wine testing experience in one of the cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia or visit The Ribeira District, a UNESCO site, and wonder around its narrow streets and colorful buildings sitting at one of the bars or wine stores.

Take a boat ride on the river Douro and wonder at the Dom Luís I Bridge or visit one of the many sites the town has to offer, including São Bento Railway Station, covered with beautiful azulejo (painted ceramic tile); Clérigos Tower and Churchl, offering a panoramic view; Porto Cathedral (Sé do Porto), a Romanesque church; Livraria Lello, a beautiful bookstore with an astonishing art deco and gothic style interior.

You can also visit the Serralves Museum and Gardens complex or explore the traditional market of Mercado do Bolhão. Travelers can also visit the Clerigos Church and Tower or the Palácio da Bolsa, the stock exchange palace.

If you want to get away for a silent moment you can always enjoy some relaxation time on one of Porto’s beaches or enjoy the beachfront district of Foz do Douro and watch the sunset over the Atlantic Ocean.

Fort the culinary lovers, beside great wines you can enjoy many of Porto’s rooftop bars and restaurants and try out local dishes, perhaps a quick francesinha (a traditional Portuguese sandwich).

Porto is easy to get to as its airport receives plenty of international flights. The city is also well connected via highways and is home even to a high-speed train station.

Madrid, Spain

The capital of Spain is a popular travel destination for a weekend getaway in Europe.

Home to many outdoor meeting points and hangout places, parks, and squares, like Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, Retiro Park Madril, it’s a pleasure to spend time outdoors here.

Between its arches and monuments, Madrid is home to several landmarks like the Puerta de Alcalá, Royal Palace of Madrid, Cibeles Palace and Fountain that houses the City Hall. You will be delighted to discover Gran Vía, Madrid’s main shopping and activity street, El Prado neighborhood, Chueca district, Mercado de San Migue, the historical market, a heaven the food and culinary lovers, or areas like Malasaña and La Latina for the trendy bars and restaurants.

Madrid is a hotspot for art and culture. Some of the museum worth mentioning are the Prado Museum, Reina Sofia Museum, Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. If you are not too big on busy museums just walk around the streets and enjoy the many murals and street arts, street dancers, and musicians you will bump into.

If you have more days or want to spend a day from your trip on excursions, you can do day trips to Avila and Segovia and Telodo, or the Escorial Monastery and the Valley of the Fallen.

Madrid is a nice weekend, short holiday, or hub destination, being served by an airport with many international and global flights, highspeed train station, highways, and bus terminals. With average yearly temperatures of 14.5 C (58 F) Madrid can offer something to everyone.

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona, the capital of the region Catalonia, is not only known for its soccer team but also for its unique blend of gothic and modernist architecture. Many renowned architects and artists contributed to this spectacular image.

An easy to get to city, Barcelona is connected by airport, railways, and highways, and even a port (one of Europe’s most important).

One of the best-known sites in Barcelona is the famous basilica Sagrada Familia. Followed by Camp Nou Stadium, FC Barcelona’s playing ground. Although these are the most well-known Barcelona has many more things to offer, such the Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic), with medieval narrow streets; La Rambla, a bustling street in the heart of the city center hosting street performers, flamenco music, dancers, and coffee shops ; Casa Batlló and Casa Milà; Montjuïc Castlel; Magic Fountain of Montjuïc hosting a spectacular music and light show; Barcelona Pavilion or the celebrated Picasso Museum.

Festivals are very popular in Barcelona, the city hosting an amazing concert hall Palau de la Música Catalana. It’s also home to La Mercè festival, a celebration of music, art, and parades.

If you want to get away from the city center, you can enjoy a day in Tibidabo Amusement Park or for some more relaxed moments, soak up the sun at one of Barcelona’s beaches.

You can enjoy the Catalan cuisine at one of the many restaurants, a blend of traditional and innovative contemporary cuisine, sampling delicacies like pa amb tomàquet – bread with tomato, or the traditional Catalan stew. We can’t pass by the seafoods and tapas before enjoying a sip from the local wine or trifascio a Spanish coffee variety.

If you have more time on your hands and want to go on a day trip, you can visit the nearby Montserrat mountain range and the Benedictine monastery, an UNESCO Heritage Site, or the Costa Brava coastline.

With an average winter temperature of 10.3 °C (50.5 F) and summer temperature of 22,5 (72.5 F), Barcelona is an ideal destination year around, no matter if you visit for a few days or enjoy a longer stay.

Athens, Greece

Athens is one of our favorites. An open-air history and culture museum. You don’t even need to visit the sites … just walk in the city. No matter if you enjoy history or prefer the nightlife or other activities, Athens is a heaven for everyone.

Everyone knows the majestic image of the Acropolis, but many do not know that it also has a museum. On the slopes of the Acropolis, you can visit the amphitheater. And just a bit further away, the Greek and Roman Agoras (market place), with gorgeous views of the Acropolis. You can also walk around in the narrow streets of Plaka, explore Anafiotika, or you visit the Tower of Winds.

If you prefer contemporary markets, you can shop at Monastiraki Square’s flee market, visit the Varvakios Central Municipal Market or enjoy one of the taverns. Head to Kolonaki neighborhood sampling delicacies such as moussaka, stifado, or avgolemono soup.

For the outdoor lovers, many sites are easy to walk by, or you can go and hike to watch the sunset at Lycabettus Hill or check the panoramic views from Hephaestus Hill.

If you also want to learn about culture and modern Greece, you can visit one of the museums like National Archaeological Museum, Benaki Museum, Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation, Byzantine & Christian Museum, and many more. Or check out the Changing of the Guards in Syntagma Square.

If you want to have a quiet moment you can walk around the National Gardens of Athens, take a look at Zappeion Hall or visit Panathenaic Stadium, home of the first modern Olympic games.

Even though Christmas is not exactly white here, the colorful markets liven up the city during the festive period. Plus, the city is a big dance hub, from Latin dances to Greek traditional to ballroom and Tango, you will find them all.
With a winter average of 11 C (51.5 F) and summer averages of 27 C (80.6 F), Athens is a great place to spend your time, just be prepared for windy winter weather.

Served by an internet airport, two ports, train station, and bus stations, Athens is easy to get to from other European cities as well as from overseas.

Santorini, Greece

The mythical and idyllic Cyclades Island of Santorini, spawned many dreams and stories around it, including the one that it’s the place of Atlantis, the sunken city.

A charming island with the best-known view of white buildings with blue rooftops, Santorini is full of history but at the same time a very buzzy party island.

Explore its capital town of Fira, walk narrow streets and discover magical shops, hike around the island visiting the Skaros Rock and Oia town for some stunning sunset views, loose yourself in Ancient Thera, wonder around Pyrgos the original capital, stroll around the village of Vothonas, a village with houses carved in the rock face, or visit the frozen Ruins of Akrotiri … you will be amazed every step.

The island can offer so much, not only during the summer but during winter as well. Visit the village of Emporio with its houses in defensive layout, with only one entrance, the Byzantine Castle of Oia, or the hiking path to the Volcano’s Caldera.

Enjoy the local cuisine and wines, celebrated in Greece and worldwide, or relax at one of the hot springs. During summertime you can take trips to the nearby islands of Thirassia, often described as Santorini from 50 years ago, or check out the Vulcanic island of Nea Kameni.

If you want a longer stay, you can visit the Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira or relax at one of the black sand beaches of the island.

The Island also hosts many festivals, even in wintertime, highlighting many traditional music, dances, and foods.
With an average of 12 C (53.5 F) winter temperatures Santorini is a warm destination year around, with summer temperatures peaking at an average of 26.6 C (79.8 F).

While Santorini has an airport, served by a variety of flights especially during the travel season, the most enjoyable way to arrive is by ferry.

Florence, Italy

The hub of Italian Renaissance, home to many of Leonardo da Vinci’s works, Florence is a social and art hub, with some unique architecture and vibes.

A vibrant city both in summer and winter, Florence is home to a wonderful Christmas Market. Don’t leave without tasting the traditional Christmas Panettone.

In February, however, is a great base to visit and participate in Viareggio carnival heled in the city of Viareggio, a city 1h 30 min away by train.

Beside art, the city is an architectural dream land with sights to visit like the Dom Square and Duomo di Firenze also known as Florence Cathedral, Baptistery of St. John, Ponte Vecchio, one of the most photographed bridges in the world, being home to shops and jewelry stores with an interesting and intriguing history.

Other sights are Piazza della Signoria where you can find Palazzo Vecchio, the town hall of Florence, the Boboli Gardens located behind Pitti Palace, the church of Santa Maria Novella, Giotto’s Bell Tower with its 414 steps to the top or the Vasari Corridor hosting the Uffizi Gallery.

You can connect with local history by visiting many of the art galleries and museums, like The Accademia Gallery housing the sculpture of David.

If you have cash to burn you can always go on a shopping spree on Via Tornabuoni, Florence’s luxury shopping street, or just hide in one of many restaurants and bars enjoying a Tuscan dinner.

If you really want to get away from the buzzing city center you can take a day trip around Tuscany visiting other cities around like Siena, San Gimignano, Pisa or doing a wine and lunch trip at one of the farms or wineries so respected and liked worldwide.

And if you enjoy unusual experiences take a hot air balloon and wonder at the fantastic landscape.

If you prefer to stay for longer, you can do a full day trip to Cinque Terre, the charming villages perched on mountain sides, overlooking the azure see.

Although snow and freezing temperatures can be a thing here, the winter average of Florance is around 6.5 C (44F) and summer temperatures can go as high as 32 C (90F) but the average is still around 25.5 C (78 F) making it a desirable destination year around.

Plus, you get here super easily as the city being connected by an international airport, highways, and fast trains.

Bari, Italy

The capital city of Apulia region, Bari, is one of the biggest cities in sunny Southern Italy. Located on the Adriatic Sea, Bari is a gem and wonderful place to discover the real Italian lifestyle.

Served by an airport, highways, ferry port (connecting it even to Greece) and rail stations, Bari is a fantastic location for a weekend escape and a great hub to discover the region on a longer vacation.

Occupied by Greeks, Turks and many more, Bari is very interesting mash of history, culture, and architecture.
Walk around the city, wonder and be amazed by sights like the historic Old Town of Bari Vecchia, Basilica di San Nicola, housing relics of Santa Clause and starting point of Sait Nicholas Day Celebration every December 6th a significant religious procession.

Other must-see sight we can mention are the Cattedrale di San Sabino and its crypts, Swabian Castle, a medieval fortress, Teatro Petruzzelli, the historic opera house, and Fiera del Levante, hosting a large trade fair and exhibition. Or check out Bari underground, including the subterranean passages that were part of the city’s historical water system.

You can enjoy a silent moment on Bari’s Seafront, Lungomare, or take a daytrip to enjoy a (long) meal at one of the traditional Tavernolas around the region and enjoy the traditional Apulia culinary delights tasting some of the local liquors like Alloro (bay leaves liquor), the local wines, focaccia barese, pastas, and sgagliozze.
Street food is a big part of the local cuisine as well. Or you can stroll around the small streets and enjoy a good wine or coffee at one of the caffes.

Bari is a great base to take trips to visit the small sea front caves at Poligano a Mere, take a boat ride to some amazing scenery or visiting the UNESCO site of Alberobello and Matera.

If you don’t like to rush it just hope on a private cruise sailboat and drop your feet into the cold but clear waters of the Adriatic Sea.

Bari has a mild climate with lots of rain during the winter months sometime even with short periods of freezing temps. With an average of 8.5 C (47.3 F) during winter and 25 (77 F) during summer, Bari can be a lovely weekend destination year around.

Rome, Italy

The capital of Italy is an open museum and history gallery. No matter where you step you will find something amazing to see and do.

It’s also the birthplace of the Roman republic and Empire, and luckily a lot of the historical sites have been very well preserved.

So many things to see and do that most likely you won’t be able to do it all in one weekend trip, so a few of the must see location we can mention are the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Pantheon, Palatine Hill, Capitoline Museums, Mouth of Truth, Piazza Navona, Vatican City and Museum with the Sistine Chapel, St. Petrer’s Basilica, Spenish Steps, Fontana di Trevi, Castel Sant’Angelo, Roman Catacombs, Basilica di San Clemente and so much more.

You can do daytrips to visit Pompei, Herculaneum, Naples, or indulge in the local cafes, bars, and tavernas such as those in Trastevere or Campo di’Fiori square.

Served by two international airports, high speed train stations, many bus stops and highways and even by a nearby cursing port, Roma is an ideal hub and destination.

The coldest month is January with an average of 7C (44 F) but with temperatures as low as 3C (38 F) or even freezing sometimes with high winds. The summer average temperatures can be as high as 32 C (89 F). So, Rome can be a difficult destination to dress for. Layers are recommended.
