5 Best e-book reading apps for your Android phone (or Tablet)

Avid reader since my school years, it took a long time to switch from printed books to e-books. But when we got the tablet (several years back) I quickly turned it into my e-book reader and got hooked. Now I read from my smartphone (since it has a large enough screen to not strain my eyes).

Though I still love printed books (and still buy them), it saves a ton of space in your luggage to bring your library with you on a mobile device (phone or tablet).

It has taken me a while to find my favorite e-book reader. In case you are looking for one, here is a list of what I tried:

1. Cool Reader

This was my e-book reader for a long while (on our old Asus tablet, as well as on my old Sony Xperia M2 Aqua and on my Sony Xperia Z2) and I really liked it. The problem arose when I upgraded to Android 6 and the app didn’t see any of my saved e-books on the SD card. Ooops.

It can open a variety of formats, including: epub, doc, txt and mobi.

2. Aldiko

This was Alex’s favorite app for a while. It supports epub and pdf, as well as Adobe DRM encrypted ebooks. The in app purchase option includes a variety of titles and a lot of them are free.

3. Kobo Books

When they accepted paypal payments, this was my favorite app to get my ebooks through and thus use it as a reader as well. It syncs with all your devices. It also includes a variety of free books in their store. It is typically cheaper than buying via Google Play Books.

4. Google Play Books

It is the app I currently use, whether I buy from their store or not. It supports epub and pdf ; and you can upload them to your library and has a neat feature that changes the background color based on the ambient light and it’s amazing for evening reading. Plus, the app can read to you (when you are working out, for example).

There is a huge list of free to download books and sometimes you may be lucky to find a classic you’ve been looking for. Pay attention that it requires Internet connection when you open the app.

5. Amazon Kindle

Yup, they do have an app for Android and it’s pretty nice. The problem is that it only opens books you purchased via Amazon store. Luckily there are many free options here as well.

Other e-book reading apps I have not tried yet:

  • FBReader : supports epub, doc and html.
  • Moon+ reader : supports epub, pdf, mobi and txt. This one has come up in many searches when I was looking for a replacement for Cool Reader.
