21 European Destinations to Visit in 2021

Remember how excited we’ve all been about changing the decade and making 2020 THE year for us?

Whether we’ve planned to visit bucket list destinations, start a new business, or try out a new hobby, life had a way to throw us off track. Except in 2020, the entire world stopped, and things were quite eerie back in March until the end of May.

Travel is still one of the worst-hit sectors by the covid-19 pandemic. Some rays of hope existed during summer when many Europeans decided to return to traveling and enjoying life (pretty much without many changes).

As we approach the end of the year, news of three vaccines (a.n. as of November 2020) with possible high efficiency has made everyone optimistic about the future.

Whether we could return to safely traveling in spring, summer, or even later in the year, we should never lose hope.

And that’s why, in this article, I’m sharing 21 destinations to visit in 2021.

But first, how has travel changed during covid-19, and what we can expect when we travel in 2021?

As destinations reopened, accommodations, museums, restaurants, and other tourist establishments had to obey local laws to prevent the spread of covid-19.

In those countries where these restrictions exist, typically cashless payments have become the norm, while venues have reduced the number of indoor seats. Restaurants function at reduced capacity, with emphasis on dining outdoors (and the tables are distanced).

Masks are mandatory indoors and, in many countries, outdoors, too.

You may be required to show proof of a covid-19 PCR negative test upon entry and/ or you may need to quarantine yourself in the country you visit.

Since there are no blanket rules across Europe (or the European Union), make sure to always check the entry rules and local regulations before you plan a trip. Re-check everything a week or two before departure so that you can make an appointment to take the test if needed.

Make a point to have travel insurance, including medical, and resolve to always book accommodation, travel, and activities that can be canceled without penalties.

Without further ado, here are 21 European Destinations to visit in 2021 (when the time is right to travel again):

European Destinations to Visit in 2021: Alberobello, Italy

alberobello

>>book your accommodation in Alberobello

Located in Apulia (Ita: Puglia), just a stone’s throw away from Bari, Alberobello is one of the most picturesque towns you’d be visiting in Europe. Its name literally translates to “beautiful tree”.

The trulli make it look like it belongs in a fairy tale rather than on Earth. And for certain, you’d expect fantastic creatures to leap around. The houses are specific to the Itria Valley region in Apulia and you will find them in other places (just that these are the most famous and protected by a UNESCO World Heritage Site).

Visit outside of the high travel season and you’d be reward with an empty city to explore. You can spend some time exploring the streets but aside from taking photos, buying souvenirs, and stopping for a meal, there’s not much else to do. But its beauty makes it so worth it to do a half-day trip from Bari.

Before you ask, yes, you can sleep in a trullo. Just make sure to inquire early and book ahead.

European Destinations to Visit in 2021: Amsterdam, The Netherlands

amsterdam

>>book your accommodation in Amsterdam

The capital of the Netherlands offers a lot of amazing things to do no matter when you visit. Although you probably want to avoid visiting the winter if you don’t like cold winds.

Spring, on the other hand, is quite perfect. Whether you want to see the tulips across miles and miles between Haarlem and Leiden, or you plan to explore the city on bike, you won’t regret a visit at this time of the year.

Amsterdam is also a great city if you enjoy shopping, whether it’s visiting small shops or a giant flea market. Don’t forget to stop by the many cafes to do some people watching …and refueling. And speaking of eating & drinking, head to one of the rooftop bars for gorgeous views of the city.

Should you be staying in town for more than a couple of days, plan some day trips. Within easy reach are beaches, windmills, and gorgeous countryside.

European Destinations to Visit in 2021: Athens, Greece

athens

>>book your accommodation in Athens

The cradle of Western Civilization, Athens is a city well worth a visit no matter when you plan your trip. Mid-summer tends to get scorching hot so you may want to include an island or two in the itinerary.

For budget travelers, late winter and early spring offer a combination of affordable accommodation, enough things to do, and lovely weather.

You can spend several days exploring the most important historical landmarks in Greece’s capital. If you are strapped for time, make sure to include the Acropolis of Athens, the Roman Agora, and the Greek Agora. Then head over to the Temple of Olympian Zeus before you stop to relax in the Royal Gardens.

Should you be staying for longer, there are quite a lot of day trips that you can take. A gorgeous one is to visit the Temple of Poseidon (just make sure to check the forecast so that it’s not too cloudy or…rainy).

Athens is dotted with tavernas where you can enjoy traditional food. Pay attention and order according to the season (skip the Greek salad if you visit in winter, but make sure to try the moussaka).

European Destinations to Visit in 2021: Barcelona, Spain

barcelona

>>book your accommodation in Barcelona

Barcelona is almost synonymous with art. Who hasn’t heard about the majestic- yet still unfinished – La Sagrada Familia? Or about the Picasso Museum?

But even if you aren’t exactly into arts, you will have a blast here. Head over to La Boqueria, the city’s oldest market. There are 200 stalls and, for sure, there’s something for your taste buds.

Then take a stroll on La Rambla. Linger as much as you want.

Check out Park Güell, a masterpiece and, without a doubt, home to a make-believe landscape. The brainchild of Antoni Gaudí and Eusebi Güell, it offers some amazing views of the city.

Oh, and why not hit the beach while you are here. Barceloneta might be loud and popular but it’s an experience in itself.

European Destinations to Visit in 2021: Brasov, Romania

brasov

>>book your accommodation in Brasov

Ideally located within a short distance of both Romania’s capital, Bucharest, and Transylvania’s capital, Cluj-Napoca, Brasov is both a winter and summer destination.

Those who enjoy winter sports, head over here to hit the slopes, which are very close to the town. Those who prefer to hike would come in summer. The superb Bucegi mountains are within close distance.

Explore the city’s Old Town at your own pace – or take a free walking tour -, visit the famous Black Church, spend time in Piata Sfatului, and more. Do you know there’s a small street here – called Rope Street? You may need to squeeze to fit.

If you have more than a few days to explore the area, there are a ton of day trips you can take, including a visit to the infamous Bran Castle (spoiler: Vlad Tepes never set foot here). A variety of other citadels and fortresses can be visited in the nearby area.

European Destinations to Visit in 2021: Bratislava, Slovakia

bratislava

>>book your accommodation in Bratislava

Located very close to Hungary and formerly part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, Bratislava can easily be explored in a couple of days.

Everything is in the Old City Center. Between the many cafes, a huge castle, and the Danube Promenade, you’d have time to explore and relax.

Cross the Danube and go up to the restaurant on the UFO bridge, for some great views of the city. They aren’t too shabby from the Castle either (but it’s not that high). There’s a part of the town with some cute buildings, including the Blue Church, which will make for some lovely photo opportunities.

Also make sure to plan a day trip to Devin Castle, located right on the Danube, where Hungary, Austria, and Slovakia meet. There’s a slow ferry that can take you there (and back). Or you can rent a bike and follow the bike lane all the way there.

European Destinations to Visit in 2021: Budapest, Hungary

budapest

>>book your accommodation in Budapest

Budapest is one of the European cities that always has something new to offer when you return. Whether it’s a new restaurant, bar, or some new attraction, you’ll be happy to discover how vibrant this gorgeous city is.

Just walk on the Danube Promenade and take in the beauty of the city and the grandeur of the sights. Walk past the Parliament to Margaret Island (Hun: Margitsziget). Or hop on tram 2 and check out the sights on the move. Stop by the Central Market Hall to get some yummy souvenirs – smoked paprika anyone?

Metro Line 1, the oldest in Hungary’s capital, is an experience in itself. Hop off at Heroes Square. Explore the City Park and Vajdahunyad Castle.

On the Buda side, Buda Castle can keep you busy for a while; together with the entire district and its superb landmarks such as Matthias Church. Also on this side of town, the Citadella offers some lovely views of Pest (plus a good workout to get up there).

Hungary might be landlocked, but it has its own “sea”: Balaton Lake. It’s quite close to the capital and can be a nice side trip, especially on scorching summer days.

European Destinations to Visit in 2021: Crete, Greece

chania, crete

>>book your accommodation in Heraklio

Once the home of the Minoans, the oldest civilization in Europe, Crete is now one of the most popular European travel destinations. The warmest of the Greek islands bears the imprint of former conquests, which only adds to its charm.

Knossos, the capital of Minoan Crete is located close to Heraklio and is the most important archeological site to explore. Its Palace is thought to have been the home of the mythical Minotaur. Today, you can explore the ruins and get a feel of what this marvelous place must have been.

Another important Minoan site can be found at Phaistos. Its dramatic position on a high plateau over the plain makes it quite an interesting place to visit. There’s been a settlement here since the Neolithic times, but it reached its peak in 1700 BC.

Rethymno’s Old Told and Chania’s Venetian Harbour are gorgeous and will give you quite a lot of things to do and places to photograph as you explore them.

Nature loves would love to explore Samaria Gorge, although it is the most famous and busiest. There are other alternatives for those who are more adventurous.

And no trip to Crete is complete without spending time on its gorgeous beaches.

European Destinations to Visit in 2021: Cluj-Napoca, Romania

cluj napoca

>>book your accommodation in Cluj-Napoca

The capital of Transylvania, Cluj-Napoca is a charming city, filled with things to do.

You can spend quite a bit of time exploring the Old Town, with its large boulevards, cafes lining the streets, and old citadel walls and towers. There are a lot of churches to explore, museums to check out, and parks to relax in, too. The Botanical Garden is large and gorgeous in spring and autumn.

For a lovely view of the city, walk up on Cetatuia. You can even pack some snacks and set up an impromptu picnic here.

Even if you only choose to spend a few days here, make sure to take a day trip to Turda Salt Mine. There’s a ferries wheel inside the mine, as well as a mining museum, and a lake!

European Destinations to Visit in 2021: Dublin, Ireland

dublin

>>book your accommodation in Dublin

Dublin is a charming city in Ireland, particularly known for its streets, live music, and architecture. It’s practically synonymous with pubs – and pub culture.

Start your day with the Irish “breakfast” – that’s a pint of Guinness (and remember you can tour the Guinness Brewery, too). Then explore the many cathedrals and castles, stop for some fish n’chips, and listen to live music on one of the gorgeous streets. There’s always someone basking.

No trip to Dublin is complete without spending an evening at the Temple Bar, possibly the most famous bar in the country. The entire area is filled with pubs and venues with live music.

And if you crave some time in nature, head over to Stephen’s Green Park. You can stroll its alleyways, stop to feed the ducks, relax, or even bring a picnic basket to enjoy a nice lunch.

European Destinations to Visit in 2021: Eger, Hungary

eger

>>book your accommodation in Eger

Eger can easily be visited as a day trip from Budapest, but we recommend staying at least for two days. The small city is famous for stopping the Turks from getting further into Western Europe. It’s also home to an amazing wine region.

Eger Castle will keep you busy for some good hours. You can even take a break for food or a coffee at the café on site. Nearby, the streets leading up to the Castle are filled with cafes and shops.

While you can taste wine within the city, you should consider a short trip to the Valley of the Beautiful Women. There are a variety of wines to choose from.

European Destinations to Visit in 2021: Ios, Greece

ios, cyclades, greece

>>book your accommodation in Ios

Nested between Mykonos and Santorini, Ios is also part of the Cyclades. Outside of the high season, you won’t even say it’s deemed as a “party island” but once the tourist season kicks in, you will be faced with a very packed small island.

Plan your trip in late May, when the tavernas start to open and other businesses prepare for the summer. Some tours will run, the museum is open, many shops are also already welcome visitors, but you’ll mostly have the island for yourself.

Hike from Mylopotas Beach to Klima Beach or check out many other gorgeous beaches. Try your hand at paddle boarding (SUP) or go snorkeling.

If you are not a fan of water sports, you can just walk the narrow alleyways of Chora. The views from the Church with the Palm Tree are gorgeous. Or go all the way up to Gaitis Museum and stay for the sunset. There are also windmills to check out.

European Destinations to Visit in 2021: Lisbon, Portugal

lisbon

>>book your accommodation in Lisbon

A lovely city, ideal for a long weekend escape, Lisbon will appeal to you thanks to its mix of both old-fashioned and modern feel.

One of the most interesting things to do is to see the city from above. And while it doesn’t have a super high vantage point, its miradoures (lookouts) are just perfect for the bird’s eye view.

A charming old-fashioned area is Alfama, with its narrow streets and stunning architecture. Visit Lisbon Cathedral and spend some time exploring Sao Jorge Castle, and the Fado Museum.

Craving for more history? Visit Belem with its famous Tower.

If you want to see the city’s beautiful streets and sights but don’t feel like walking, catch a ride on Tram 28. It will get packed at certain hours of the day but if you plan to ride it before 11 a.m., you should avoid the crowds.

Lisbon’s location makes it ideal as a base for some lovely day trips, such as Sintra with its gorgeous Castle, Nazare and Cascais, with their stunning beaches (and great surfing).

European Destinations to Visit in 2021: London, England

london

>>book your accommodation in London

London is a stunning metropolis which can keep you occupied for years, let alone days.

Your best bet is to “divide and conquer”: focus on several areas and don’t even expect to see “everything”. When we visited back in 2011, we stayed in Bayswater. Gorgeous, close to major sights, and a fantastic hub for nightlife. After all, I easily counted 5 pubs within 2 blocks from our hotel.

There are quite a few free things to do in London including visiting the famous British Museum – you’ll spend half a day or more here!

Make sure to also catch the change of guards at the Palace of Buckingham. It’s typically packed so arrive early to get a good spot.

Although many consider the London Eye to be a very touristy place, we’ve enjoyed the experience. The weather wasn’t perfect, but it wasn’t that bad either. It’s expensive, though, so if you need to watch your budget, you may want to skip the ride – and just take pics of it.

A stroll alongside Themes will ensure you get to see a lot of the landmarks, including Big Ben, Tower Bridge, and the Tower of London.

Oxford Street is the top shopping avenue but also Europe’s busiest street. It’s definitely an experience (not for those who hate crowded places though).

Make use of the tube network if you need to venture into various parts of town. It’s the fastest and easiest way to get around.

European Destinations to Visit in 2021: Naples, Italy

vesuvius

>>book your accommodation in Naples

In the shadow of the famous Vesuvius stands the city of Naples. Spared by the devastating eruption of 79 AD (the one that destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum), Naples always conjures two feelings. You’d either hate it or love it, there’s no in-between.

Since it made our bucket list, it’s clear that we loved Naples. As crazy, smelly, and crowded as it may be!

While it’s usually visited as a day trip from Rome, or used a base to explore Pompeii, Herculaneum, or Sorrento, it has some gorgeous sights to check out, too. Its Old Town is a mix of cramped alleys, shops, pizzerias, souvenir places, churches, and piazzas.

If you enjoy history then make sure to join Napoli Sotterranea – or Naples Underground – a tour of the ancient city that takes about 2 hours.

Above ground, make your way to the port. The area was recently renovated, and it really looks great. Plus, there are two castles to check out.

Needless to say, no trip to Naples is complete with visiting the famous Pompeii. And while at it, stop by Herculaneum. We loved the latter more (it wasn’t packed and it’s much better preserved, too).

European Destinations to Visit in 2021: Paris, France

paris

>>book your accommodation in Paris

Cliché as it might sound, the City of Lights shouldn’t be overlooked in any bucket list.

With such famous landmarks as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Sacre Coeur, and Champs Elysees, Paris remains a favorite for lovers and singles alike.

Start your day with a croissant, have a baguette for lunch, and, by all means, eat those macarons (and bring some back home).

No matter what you do in Paris, you won’t be bored. Ever.

European Destinations to Visit in 2021: Santorini, Greece

santorini

>>book your accommodation in Fira

Santorini surely doesn’t lack things to do. Famous for its stunning sunsets, it’s also home to several ancient sites – Akrotiri and Thira -, superb villages, and gorgeous beaches.

If you don’t particularly enjoy crowds, visit Santorini either in late May or early October. The weather is nice and it’s not yet super packed with other travelers.

Aside from spending time enjoying the gorgeous island, you should try the local wines. Thanks to the volcanic soil, they aren’t similar to anything you’ve tasted before.

European Destinations to Visit in 2021: Sibiu, Romania

sibiu

>>book your accommodation in Sibiu

Gorgeous and well-known among digital nomads, Sibiu is only one of Transylvania’s gems. The German heritage is strong here, particularly obvious during December when the Christmas Market is held. And very visible in the architecture.

If you don’t have a lot of time on your hands, you can easily see most of the important sights during the weekend. Combine it with a day trip to Sighisoara or add it to your Transylvania itinerary.

Two main squares (Piata Mare & Piata Mica) make up the bulk of the Historical Town. Around them, there are a lot of historical buildings to check out, including the Lutheran Cathedral, the Council Tower, the Stairway Passage, the Bridge of Lies, and more.

European Destinations to Visit in 2021: Sighisoara, Romania

sighisoara

>>book your accommodation in Sighisoara

A Medieval Citadel still inhabited, Sighisoara can easily be visited in a day – the perfect day trip from Sibiu or Brasov. But, we recommend spending at least a weekend here.

Avoid the weekends as it’s also a place adored by those wanting to escape Bucharest. And you’re better off planning your trip anytime but during the high travel season. Rumor has it, Sighisoara is gorgeous when snow falls.

I’ve been to the city many times but never during winter. It was either for the Medieval Festival (which goes against my above advice – but hey, I was in my early 20s so didn’t mind the crowds then), or for our anniversary. Late May, the latter choice, is perfect for the visit, though.

You can spend some hours just walking on the streets and checking out the shops. You can visit the house where Vlad Tepes was born – yes, Dracula fans, that house, just like the historical character that Bram Stoker used to base his story on, exists!

Take the Students’ Stairs up to the church on the hills. The views of the countryside are lovely. Or visit the museum in the Clock Tower and climb up – for views of some of the Citadel.

European Destinations to Visit in 2021: Szentendre, Hungary

szentendre, hungary

>>book your accommodation in Szentendre

It took me more than a few visits to Budapest to finally make it to Szentendre. Yes, it can be visited as a day trip from Hungary’s capital. Take the train or rent a bike and follow the lane skirting the Danube bank.

Szentendre is tiny and is famous for the Marzipan Museum. Other than that, just stroll the streets and pop in a shop or two. There are also some churches – hidden in alleyways. And there’s also the Danube with a promenade.

Halfway between Budapest proper and Szentendre, there’s an archeological site many don’t know about: Aquincum. It can be visited in a couple of hours (including the on site museum).

European Destinations to Visit in 2021: Vienna, Austria

vienna

>>book your accommodation in Vienna

Particularly known for its Christmas Markets, Vienna seems to have a different character each season.

During summer, head to Prater and spend some time checking out the amusement park. It may be touristy but it’s home to the oldest Ferries Wheels in Europe!

Check out the Museum Quarter, too, and shop on Mariahilfer Strasse. Or stop for a coffee.

St. Stephen’s Cathedral is gorgeous if only a bit spooky at night. And the Palaces are gorgeous to explore. If you don’t fancy touring them, you can spend a lovely time exploring their gardens, particularly the ones at Schonbrunn.

For a different experience, Danube Tower offers some interesting views across the countryside around Vienna.

Come winter, you won’t enjoy the temperatures but there are plenty of things to do to keep you warm. We particularly enjoyed the Museum of Technology. That’s aside from visiting a lot of Christmas Markets – and trying mulled cider for the first time.
