European Destinations to Visit in 2020: Belfast, Northern Ireland

Belfast
>>book your accommodation in Belfast

Named as one of the coolest cities to visit by National Geographic, Belfast has changed enormously in the past 20 years and it is dominantly thanks to the TV series Game of Thrones.

Emerging from the “troubles”, Belfast has concentrated on making the City a visitors’ playground. From the Titanic Exhibit to traditional music in pubs throughout the city, Belfast is a brilliant place to visit for the “craic” or good times as the Irish say.

For foodies the Belfast food scene is at the top of its game and if you go check out Eat Street on the Lisburn Road serving the best vegan Mac & Cheese in the world.

Don’t forget to learn about Belfast’s troubled history by taking a Black Cab or walking tour around the Peace Walls. Write your name on the wall besides Bill Clinton or Nelson Mandela and a wish for lasting peace. Let your driver take you through Shankhill or the Falls Road to learn about the Belfast murals.

Enjoy that Norn Ireland sense of humor when you hear the names of some street art. Go look for the “balls on the Falls” or “Nula with her hula” and even the “Big Fish” aka the Salmon of Knowledge and enjoy all Belfast has to offer.

European Destinations to Visit in 2020: Riga, Latvia

riga
>>book your accommodation in Riga

The capital of Latvia, Riga, is a very interesting city that has a lot to offer to tourists – interesting museums; a beautiful waterfront along the river; nice churches; a very well kept old historic center and many excellent restaurants.

You will need a few days to take in all that Riga has to offer. I recommend to start your visit in Riga Old Town, to see all the most touristy bits of the city. There you will be able to see St. Peter’s Church, where you can climb to the viewing platform for fabulous views of the city. The House of the Blackheads is one of the most iconic buildings in Riga. You don’t have to go in, but make sure to at least walk by the square where it is located (it’s honestly impossible to miss!). I also recommend going to the Three Brothers – but keep in mind that unless you have a GoPro or a wide-angle, it is impossible to get a decent photo of it. Last but not least, make sure to walk by and through the Swedish Gate – the only remaining gate among those that provided access to the city.

Right outside the Old Town, you will be able to admire several buildings in the Art Nouveau style. The highest concentration is in Albert Street.

If you have time to explore the city a bit more in-depth, head out of the Old Town and go straight to The Corner House. This is a building that has the main access on a street corner, where, during the Soviet rule over Latvia, the KGB held anybody thought to be a political dissident. People who were held in custody at The Corner House rarely made it out alive – and if they did, it was only to be moved to other prisons.

Finally, for more fabulous views of the city go to the Skyline Bar. You will find it on the 26th floor of the Radisson Blu Hotel which is located on Elizabetes. You can get in for free, but I recommend sitting for a drink to wait for the sunset.

For an excellent vegan meal, go to Fat Pumpkin at Grēcinieku iela 11 in the heart of Riga Old Town. They have a selection of healthy food choices, as well as 100% vegan burgers and desserts. It’s a bit more pricey than the local average, but the fact that it is always packed gives in to the quality of the food – make sure to reserve in advance!

European Destinations to Visit in 2020: Brussels, Belgium

brussels
>>book your accommodation in Brussels

You can’t miss visiting Brussels, Belgium! Why? Because first, it’s home to some of the most delicious food and secondly its charming architecture and comic museums are a great idea for a getaway. On top, the entire city center has been converted into a pedestrian area.

When it comes to typical food in Belgium, you can’t miss its legendary fries, waffles, and beer. In recent years, several vegan restaurants opened up. One of the best ones is Les 4 Jeudis.

What I like best about Brussels is its laid-back vibe. In a nutshell, the Belgian capital has the architecture of Paris, but the laid-back vibe of Amsterdam. Even if you only have 24 hours, there are plenty of things to do in Brussels in a day.

European Destinations to Visit in 2020: Glasgow, Scotland

glasgow
>>book your accommodation in Glasgow

Glasgow is often overlooked in favor of Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh. While in Glasgow you won’t find castles or winding cobbled streets, this lively city has many incredible attractions of its own and great transport access to many nearby towns and lochs.

If you want to know how to spend a weekend in Glasgow and find out more about the city’s history, you can’t miss my childhood favorite – The People’s Palace. This museum is packed with exhibits about life in Glasgow then and now. Or why not try a walking tour with a difference with Invisible Cities a Scottish organization who hire tour guides who have experienced homelessness. As well as learning about the history of crime in the city you’ll be given a unique insight into the life of your tour guide during some of their hardest times.

Within the city center, you won’t need to go far to stumble across some of Scotland’s best eats. If you fancy a splurge make it an occasion at the West End favorite Ox and Finch for contemporary tapas. Or if you’re looking for something on the go head to your nearest convenience store to get your hands on some Irn Bru – Scotland’s favorite drink!

European Destinations to Visit in 2020: Thessaloniki, Greece

thessaloniki
>>book your accommodation in Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is always a great option. This Greek city, the second in size after Athens, is lately stealing the show given its dynamism and unique modern times take.

Located in a stunning area, Thessaloniki is also the perfect base to explore this area of the country, located a stone throw away from the three Chalkidiki peninsulas of Kassandra, Sithonia, and Agion Oros; a few of the best beaches in Greece, and the sacred Mount Athos among other gems.

On top of that, next year will be a great one to visit this city as a few world-class events will take place, including EuroPride 2020 and Photo Biennale 2020.

European Destinations to Visit in 2020: Hamburg, Germany

hamburg
>>book your accommodation in Hamburg

Hamburg is an incredible city to visit. While it is a popular destination for German tourists, it is not yet on the radar of many international tourists. But it is just a matter of time, so I recommend to get there, while it is still a hidden gem.

Did you know that Hamburg is Germany’s second-largest city after Berlin, but before Munich? Want to know some more fun facts about the city? How about the Beatles: Hamburg is the city, where they performed for the very first time on stage and had more hours on stage than in any other city. Another good one: Hamburg is the coffee capital of the world. As one of the largest port cities in Europe, Hamburg has always been a city with flourishing trade, but coffee is one of its main markets. Every seventh cup of coffee you drink has been through the port of Hamburg.

As mentioned, Hamburg is a port city, but it is not located on the ocean. Yet the city still has a very maritime feel, as it is surrounded by water – the majestic Elb river and the smaller Alster, So if you like any kind of watersports, Hamburg is a great choice. I also highly recommend a boat tour around the Hamburg harbor, which is an incredible feat of engineering, timing, and organization.

European Destinations to Visit in 2020: Bled, Slovenia

beld
>>book your accommodation in Bled

Bled isn’t exactly a secret. It’s one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and has several incredible day trips that you can do from here.

The town itself sits prettily on the shores of the turquoise waters of Lake Bled in the stunning Julian Alps. Once you’ve had your fill of the famous Bled cream cakes, rowed a boat out to the little island on the lake, and climbed up to admire the views from the castle, it’s time to head out of town to hike along the dramatic Vintgar Gorge. Just a short distance from the city this is an easy half-day trip from Bled and puts you right in the heart of nature. The path is about a mile long, with some sections involving easy boardwalk traverses – the trail is generally quite flat, but do take sensible shoes. Most people choose to walk to the end of the gorge, stopping at the café for refreshments, before turning around and retracing their steps. It’s one of the best things to do from Bled, and the color of the water just has to be seen to be believed.

European Destinations to Visit in 2020: Funchal, Madeira Island (Portugal)

funchal
>>book your accommodation in Funchal

The small Portuguese Island called Madeira was elected “World’s Leading Island Destination” in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. Six times it also held the title of “Europe’s Leading Island Destination”. It is a truly beautiful island that amazes tourists from all over the world.

Madeira is a perfect destination for hikers, mountain and nature lovers. While visiting Madeira, I recommend staying in the area of Funchal. Funchal is the biggest city of Madeira and it offers accommodations for all budgets, starting from economical hostels and b&bs up to luxurious 5-star hotels.

When exploring Funchal, make sure you check out at least one of the botanical gardens, the famous Farmer’s Market as well as the Old Town with its beautiful street art. My favorite hidden gem of Funchal is Armazem do Mercado, a pop-up art gallery where you can buy art or handmade, quality souvenirs. In the evenings, make sure you go out and try out one of the local drinks of Madeira Island such as Poncha, Nikita and obviously- Madeira Wine.

If you are a vegan, make sure you pass by the vegan van “Vantastic” located next to the Municipal Gardens (Arriaga Avenue).

European Destinations to Visit in 2020: Olomouc, Czech Republic

olomouc
>>book your accommodation in Olomouc

Olomouc is the 6th largest city in the Czech Republic with a charming Baroque historical center. You can expect to find similarly amazing sights like in Prague, including an astronomical clock!

The historical center is made up of two squares – a Lower Square and an Upper Square, which features a UNESCO-listed Holy Trinity Column. The whole area is dotted with historical fountains and one new one too.

Apart from the very heart of the city, the best part about it is how green it feels. Visit all the parks that circle the city center. I can recommend especially the Smetanovy Sady Park with its meadow flower decoration in the central walkway. Bezručovy Sady Park follows a little river creek and hides also a so-called Rosarium, a beautiful little outdoor botanical garden, free to visit.

There are enough vegan options in the city. My favorite is a small buffet-like restaurant called the Green Bar, where you can pile diverse veggie meals on your plate, fully according to your taste. It’s very cheap too.

European Destinations to Visit in 2020: Madrid, Spain

madrid
>>book your accommodation in Madrid

Madrid is a destination that has something for everyone, and one that is just waiting to be discovered by you.
Madrileños love to live outside, walk around, and take the super convenient public transport. If you’re into history and the Royal Crown of Spain, then definitely check out the Royal Palace of Madrid! Travel back in time, learn their Royal Family’s place in Spanish society, imagine the lavish dinners and lifestyle of the Spanish Crown when they lived there!

If you’re looking to get a real, local feel of Madrid however, check out the different neighborhoods! It’s truthfully where it’s at in terms of authentic food, vibe, and locals. El Barrio de las Letras (Literary Quarter) is a neighborhood with famous book passages literally ingrained into the culture and floor you walk on (look down when you’re there!).

While you’re exploring the neighborhoods, don’t forget to check out the local and modern cuisine at the markets such as the Mercado de San Anton in the Chueca neighborhood for some amazing tinto de verano and a variety of specialty tapas.

Lastly, catch the stunning sunset and a drink at the end of your day at Circulo de Bellas Artes, one of THE rooftop terraces in Madrid!

European Destinations to Visit in 2020: York City, England

york
>>book your accommodation in York

York City in England is a fantastic place to visit for a weekend break. There’s so much to see and do including plenty of cute cafes and tearooms so you can stop and relax too! I’d recommend stopping at Crumbs Cupcakery, where they make delicious cupcakes!

My highlights visiting York were walking the historic walls around the city, where you have great views of York Minster, another must-visit place! I also loved the FREE railway museum, it’s huge and you can see both old steam trains and new modern ones, perfect for a rainy day in York!

But as well as plenty to see in York you’re not far away from some other great locations nearby, which make an ideal day trip from York. You can ride the North York Steam Railway or go hiking in nearby Yorkshire Dales National Park.

European Destinations to Visit in 2020: Kinderdijk, The Netherlands

Kinderdijk
>>book your accommodation in Rotterdam

One of my all-time favorite locations in Europe is a place called Kinderdijk which is a small town in the Netherlands. While it is relatively easy to get to and can be covered easily as a day trip from any one of the country’s bustling hubs, this destination is often overlooked.

KInderdijk is a gorgeous little town and a UNESCO heritage site. It comprises of a set of canals and windmills that helped keep the waterlogged land dry. While today, the windmills aren’t the primary way in which the land is kept dry, you can still see them functional. The surroundings are picturesque especially if you wander around the area in summer. You can spend time in the museum where you can learn about the site’s history or take a boat ride in the canals.
Definitely a great way to spend a day in the countryside.

European Destinations to Visit in 2020: Zadar, Croatia

zadar
>>book your accommodation in Zadar

When considering travel to Croatia, many people immediately think of Split or Dubrovnik (both of which are great cities). But you would be remiss to overlook the Croatian town named one of Lonely Planet’s “Best in Travel 2019” guide: Zadar.
Zadar is a multi-faceted historical city. You can easily spend a few days seeing the “best of the best” sites within Zadar’s Old Town. Sites like the sea organ, the greeting to the sun, St. Donat’s church, and the forum, to name a few, simply cannot be missed.

Additionally, Zadar is a great city to use as a “home base” while discovering the many nearby islands and national parks Croatia has to offer. Many tours are available to take you on a boat (speed or ferry) to nearby islands for swimming, snorkeling, and adventuring. Or you can take a land tour from Zadar to Krka National Park where you can to swim amongst some of the world’s greatest waterfalls (highly recommended!).

And if you want to get a feel for the local culture (and away from the touristy stuff), there’s no better way than to catch an NK Zadar soccer match. Croatia takes their soccer very seriously, and it’s sure to be a good time!

European Destinations to Visit in 2020: Verona, Italy

verona
>>book your accommodation in Verona

If you are familiar with the Shakespearian story of Rome and Juliet, you probably have heard of Verona before. This northeastern Italian city, listed among the UNESCO World Heritage sites, is one of the most enchanting towns you can explore. Built by the Romans, Verona still preserves the arena, an amphitheater on a smaller scale than the Colosseum, home of an exciting summer concert season. More ruins are on the other side of the river, where the Roman theater lies surrounded by a beautiful archeological museum that could be a great start for visiting the city.

Nearby is the off the beaten path Giardino Giusti, a well-kept example of Italian Renaissance garden. Among the best things to do and see in Verona there is Basilica of Saint Zeno. Off the classical stroll around the city, this church is a masterpiece of Northeaster Romanesque style with depicts by Giotto’s scholars and a stunning try pitch by Andrea Mantegna. However, the real core of Verona is Piazza delle Erbe with the Lamberti tower from which you can enjoy a stunning view over the city. A visit to Verona can’t be considered complete without experiencing a tour of Juliet’s house looking out of her balcony. To restore and recharge your energy, you can head to La Lanterna di Verona, the best vegan restaurant in town.

European Destinations to Visit in 2020: Milan, Italy

Milan
>>book your accommodation in Milan

Milan, the glamorous capital of the Lombardy region in Northern Italy is often overlooked as a travel destination in favor of it’s more scenic neighbors Venice, Florence and Rome.

I’ve heard Milan described as a bleak, industrial concrete jungle with nothing to offer travelers except pollution, pickpockets and rude fashionable Milanese. However, in my experience, Milan is a charming metropolis with beautiful parks and piazzas, museums, art galleries, and well preserved Neo-classical, Gothic and Baroque architecture.

For museum and art lovers there is the Palazzo Brera where Italy’s best artwork is displayed in the Pinacoteca di Brera; or the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, where Da Vinci’s The Last Supper mural is located. The world-famous La Scala Opera House, Sforza Castle, Duomo of Milan and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in the historic center are a shopper, culture lover and theatergoer’s delight.

If you prefer more immersive experiences, try the non-touristy semi-weekly neighborhood market held on Mondays and Thursdays in Via San Marco. It is a feast of fresh produce, fashion, and antiques. Keep an eye out for the authentic cashmere jumpers and twin-sets for a fraction of the store price. In the early evenings partake in the Italian tradition of ‘la passeggiata’, a slow stroll around a piazza, pedestrian street or park where people dress up to be seen and share some friendly gossip.

Many eateries do have a small selection of vegetarian and vegan options available on their standard menus. Vegan options include Radice Tonda and Cibò in Porta Venezia and for a vegetarian thali try Govinda in the historic center.

European Destinations to Visit in 2020: Stockholm, Sweden

Stockholm
>>book your accommodation in Stockholm

One of my all-time favorite cities in Europe is Stockholm, Sweden. It’s a naturally beautiful city that sits along the quaint shores of Lake Mälaren. It’s also an archipelago that consists of fourteen separate islands, some of which can be visited as part of a scenic day cruise through the city’s idyllic harbor.

However, Stockholm is so much more than just a beautiful place. Because in addition to the wealth of amazing panoramic views that you’ll find in places like Fjällgatan, an ancient road that was built into the cliffs along Slussen, you’ll also discover a variety of world-class museums, delicious eateries, and exquisite centers of art that are all scattered throughout the city.

But, if you want to get the most out of your Stockholm itinerary, be sure to start your day with breakfast at Pom and Flora, an exquisite, vegan-friendly eatery where you can enjoy a fresh smoothie bowl and a nice warm latte. Next, take a stroll through Stockholm’s charming Old Town, known as Gamla Stan, where you can admire the area’s historic architecture and visit the former, royal palace. While you’re here, you can also visit some of the vibrant art murals that adorn many of the metro stations throughout the city.

But regardless of how much you do get to see and do in Stockholm, I can almost guarantee that you’ll leave yearning for just one more day in this amazing, capital city.

European Destinations to Visit in 2020: Luxembourg City, Luxembourg

luxembourg
>>book your accommodation in Luxembourg

Luxembourg City is usually seen as a place people visit for business reasons. In fact, it’s a wonderful option for a weekend away. The capital of Luxembourg is small and compact, and easy to navigate on foot and by public transport – which will be free for everyone starting on March 1st, 2020!

The city was built in a peculiar position, at the top of a rock near the confluence of two rivers. The UNESCO-listed Old City is a good place to start exploring, walking down pedestrian streets and posing in front of the Grand-Ducal palace, and maybe even stopping for some hot chocolate at the Chocolate House, located just opposite.

Then, I would recommend checking out my favorite Luxembourg attraction – the Bock Casemates, a system of tunnels and fortifications dug into the rock over which the city was built. Over the centuries, the casemates were used as cannon stand to protect the city from invaders, and the tunnels connecting them doubled up as shelters and storehouses.

To escape the crowds, I recommend taking the elevator or walking down to the Grund, the lower part of town, with a bohemian, almost Parisian atmosphere.

Luxemburgish cuisine is notoriously meat-heavy, but vegan travelers will be pleased to discover Beet, a modern bistro offering plant-based renditions of Luxembourg classics. Just be careful not to order too much, as portions are enormous!

European Destinations to Visit in 2020: Graz, Austria

graz
>>book your accommodation in Graz

Graz is a small city in Austria, once known as a shopping mecca as Trieste was, today known for its numerous pumpkin oil dishes and Kunsthaus.

Graz is the capital of Steiermark province and the second-largest city of Austria. That doesn’t mean it’s big, though, and two days will be enough to see it. Or you can even visit it as a day trip from Vienna.
Here are some of the places you shouldn’t miss in Graz:

  • Kunsthaus: Museum of Contemporary Art, built in 2003. If you don’t have time to go inside, it’s enough just to see it.
  • Murinsel: Viewpoint, built by an American architect called Vito Acconci. The name comes from Insel = island and Mur = river that flows through Graz.
  • Uhrturm: Maybe the best-known attraction in Graz. A big public clock.
  • Glockenspiel: Also a public clock, that tocks at 11, 15 and 18 o’clock. Each time a girl and a boy come out of a clock, that looks like a little building/castle.
  • Cathedral: Situated in the center of the city, built in Gothic style.

As for the food, Austria is known for pumpkin oil. First of all, not all pumpkin oil is the same, and the prices vary. There is 100 % pumpkin oil, 80 % pumpkin oil (20 % of it is sunflower oil) and lower. In the main square, Hauptplatz there are few stalls with pumpkin oil sweets. And, yes, they are amazing. Its pumpkin oil mousse covered with chocolate. Besides that, there are numerous chocolate shops with pumpkin oil candies and chocolates. Don’t miss Sporgasse (vegan) Candy Shop.

And now, once you’ve had this many calories, you could take a walk to Eggenberg Castle on the edge of the city.

European Destinations to Visit in 2020: Lisbon, Portugal

lisbon
>>book your accommodation in Lisbon

During the summer, Lisbon can get quite warm, especially with climbing the hills as you explore the beautiful neighborhoods. Try to visit in the spring, fall or even winter for cooler weather and fewer people around.

Make sure to see the common sites like Arco de Rua Augusta and Belem Tower, but to also visit Jeronimo’s Monastery when in Belem and Carmo Convent when exploring Bairro Alto. Both of the old religious structures are beautiful and make for the perfect Lisbon Instagram spots. While Jeronimo’s Monastery gets quite busy in the free part of the church, make sure to visit inside and the upper level to have it to yourself and be able to take in the beauty of the architecture. Carmo Convent is not as popular with the crowds and tours, and it has a museum at the back with many interesting artifacts.

Lisbon makes for a great base for exploring Portugal, especially nearby Sintra.

European Destinations to Visit in 2020: Amsterdam, The Netherlands

amsterdam
>>book your accommodation in Amsterdam

Amsterdam’s compact medieval center may be packed with coffee shops, red light windows, and shops selling Dutch cliches like clogs, cheese, and tulips. But there’s a lot more to Amsterdam than that.

There are also lots of nature and green spaces within the city boundaries, such as Vondelpark that lies in the heart of the old town. There’s no shortage of world-class museums, art galleries, and cultural centers. Don’t miss the interesting Tropen Museum, an ethnographic museum that showcases cultures from around the world.

Surrounding the city’s Centrum are nine different neighborhoods, each with its own character and flair. Oud West Amsterdam is my absolute favorite among all of the Amsterdam neighborhoods. There’s a real village feeling in Amsterdam Oud West, but it’s also very cosmopolitan, with a hodgepodge of ethnic restaurants, vintage shops, and outdoor markets. It’s also home to De Hallen, an old tram depot that has been converted into a modern cultural complex with a big food hall and other stores.

Bonus: European Destinations to Visit in 2020: Paris, France

paris
>>book your accommodation in Paris

Paris is definitely one of the best cities in Europe. The famous Louvre Museum is the most visited museum in the world, Musee d’Orsay is an enchantment for all impressionism fans, the parks and gardens are simply stunning, while the beautiful buildings are admired by all architecture buffs.

France’s capital is home to numerous landmarks – the Eiffel Tower is famous worldwide – and it’s also a great base for various day trips – including to the enchanting Versailles Palace. And if you want to go off the beaten path, you can simply start to explore the streets or the buildings near the popular tourist attractions and you’ll find incredible things to see and do in Paris, some not included in guides. For instance, while I was waiting in line to enter Musee d’Orsay, I noticed that across the street from it there’s another museum – The Museum of the Legion of Honor and the Orders of Chivalry. This museum is less popular – and the entry is free – so you can imagine my surprise of not knowing about it from the guide I had.

I still treasure my first trip to Paris and the memories I have!
