Review: Soho Hotel Athens

Address: 25th, Menandrou str. Athens

We stayed at Soho Hotel in March 2012. When I was looking for a place to stay in Athens, I found several hotels within my budget range and , a friend of mine, was nice enough to check this one out for me. It surely helped with making the decision to stay here. My stay was partially sponsored by the hotel and we paid 17 euros/night for a triple room (we booked a double) with bathroom en-suite, TV and AC.

I’ve looked up prices for March 2013 and they start at 24.50 euros/night/double room. Breakfast is not included in the room price and costs another 4 euros/person (pictured above).

We arrived at Soho Hotel after a long walk in Athens, carrying our wheel-less carry-on-s for about 2.5 km. We took the bus which stopped much further from Syntagma than we wanted to because there was a small demonstration in front of the Parliament. We made it safely though thanks to a map and Alex’s iGo. I also had a Vodafone SIM which I used in roaming to get an accurate route on Google Maps. All in all, it worked and we got to the hotel safely.

I was happy to discover a happy Spiros who was very nice and greeted us cheerfully. All we wanted was a shower and something to eat, to be honest. We decided to get a gyros from a place near-by after we ditched the luggage and refreshed a bit.

The hotel’s lobby offers free wi-fi and books to read. There’s also free coffee and tea for the guests ALL DAY LONG. Did I mention the coffee? 🙂

The hotel is easily reach from Monastiraki metro station; so, take the metro from the airport, get off at Monastiraki, make a left (use the square exit), cross the street, make another left and follow the street all the way to a police station. Close to it, there’s the hotel entrance.

Yes, the area is…shady at best, but we didn’t feel unsafe at all. Sure, we are not the kind of travelers to show off anything (for example I only wear my wedding band when I travel, which is not even made of gold) and our smartphones stay in the pockets, although Alex did wear his camera around the neck. I would recommend arriving at the hotel while it’s still light outside, though.

I liked the hotel because we had easy access to the sites. We never used the metro or bus (aside from getting to/from the airport). We just walked. Greek Agora , Roman Agora, Acropolis are all within 5-15 min walk from the hotel. And Spiros is nice to explain the quickest and easiest way to get everywhere.

During our stay we had hot water, the heating / AC was working, and we even had English speaking TV channels. The internet was very good in the room, too. I could work and place skype calls.

The hotel has 59 rooms ( 220 beds), ranging from singles to 5-beds rooms. Soho Hotel caters to budget and mid-range travelers. It’s been open since August 2011 and is a good option for backpackers.

Disclaimer: although my stay at Soho Hotel was partly sponsored, my review of the place wasn’t influenced by this fact. The statements above are true to my experiences during my stay.
