Review: Hauer Cafe & Confectionery, Budapest – Permanently closed

Note: As of November 2022, Hauer Cafe & Confectionery has been closed.

Traveling as a vegan can be complicated. Add in the fact that my better half is flexitarian and things get…well, more interesting. But I’m not the kind to hunt down vegan places. To the contrary, I hunt down traditional places that can offer something for vegans. And here’s our latest discovery in Budapest.

Address : Budapest, Rákóczi út 47-49, 1088 Hungary

How to get to Hauer Cafe & Confectionery

It’s close to Blaha Lujza ter metro station (M2). Once you exit the station you need to walk back towards Keleti railway station. Facing the railway station it’s on the lefthand side. You can also easily walk from the station.

The cafe

The space is huge and spottles. There’s a confectionery part to the front. And a small cafe as well. But walk further inside and you find a large space for sitting down (and the toilets downstairs).

Our experience at Hauer Cafe & Confectionery

We’ve seen the place on our previous trip (n.a. May 2018) but it looked very fancy. And we thought it would be mega expensive. Plus it was full of tourists and usually, we avoid these places. But this time (n.a Feb 2019) we were already hangry and walked quite a bit only to find nothing suitable for either of us…and we arrived at Hauer. Should we, shouldn’t we? Eh, worst case we grab a coffee, we said.

But we checked the prices and they were affordable. So then we tried to figure out what to order. My better half got an omelet and orange juice and I got grilled veggies with salad. And water (on the house). Of course, A. also wanted sweets. He asked if they carry anything vegan but the answer was… “everything has eggs”. Oh well.

A.’s omelet was a good size and came with a baguette (we shared it). I wasn’t really impressed by the 2 slices of grilled zucchini and half a pepper…but it looked good. And it tasted just as nice.

A. was pleased with the serving size and how filling the meal was. I wasn’t that pleased but it hit the spot.

The menu is both in English and Hungarian, the servers speak perfect English. Yes, it’s a place where a tourist will feel super ok and not have to navigate through language barriers. And if you like sweets, by all means, pay a visit.

What I liked:

  • the staff speaks English
  • the accommodate your requests (i.e. no cheese)
  • the cafe is spottless
  • the food is great

What I didn’t like:

  • very limited vegan food options
  • zero vegan sweets options

Conclusion

We paid 4585 Ft / 15,28 EUR (excluding the tip on top of the 10% included in the bill). For someone who eats anything, the place is great for breakfast or brunch. For sweets lovers, it’s heaven. For vegans, it means navigating around. The good part is that you can ask for no cheese. But no sweets for us.
