Lisbon is unlike any other capital city in Western Europe. It does not have Paris’s Eiffel Tower, London’s Big Ben nor Berlin’s Great Wall. What it lacks in a major landmark is made up for by its understated charm, friendly people, and the beautiful miradouros or lookout points hidden in plain sight.

Honestly, Lisbon will remind you of San Francisco a lot with its trams, rolling streets, the 25 de Abril or the Red Bridge (replica of the famous Golden Gate Bridge) and, you guessed it, those miradouros.

This post is a brief guide to these gorgeous lookout points and where to find them. If you are ever in Lisbon and want to remember that one picture perfect moment, let this post guide you to the perfect spot that will deliver so.

Mouraria and Castelo de São Jorge

The old Moorish neighborhood of Mouraria provides beautiful views of the city as you climb up the winding stairs. However, the grandest of views are offered from the top of the adjoining Castelo de São Jorge, Lisbon’s famous Moorish castle on a hilltop. Once you arrive at the top, you will be greeted with a spectacular view of the city decked with orange-red roofed houses. That is a sight to behold in the setting sun, made better with a glass of wine in hand. If this does not leave you speechless, the casually roaming majestic peacocks definitely will.

Elevador de Santa Justa

This giant elevator takes you to the very top and offers panoramic views of the city. Being a magnet for tourists, you are well advised to arrive early to avoid a long wait. There are other options to get equally good views in the city. So do not get disheartened even if you have to give this spot a miss.

Portas do Sol

If you are in Lisbon, it will be criminal to not view at least one sunrise and that, too, from Portas do Sol. This is an open balcony offering a panoramic view nested right next to the famous Alfama neighborhood. This miradouro offers a bird’s eye view of Lisbon along the Tagus river. Added bonus is the nearby smaller Miradouro de Santa Luzia that boasts of an equally amazing view.

Miradouro de Santa Graca

Visit Graca, one of the oldest suburbs of Lisbon for the famous Miradouro de Santa Graca. This often overlooked miradouro offers a sweeping view of the city with the 25 de Abril bridge as an excellent backdrop. On a very clear day, you will be able to spot the replica of Christ the Redeemer on the horizon.
