I am , again, participating in the Indie Challenge hosted by Bootsnall. Just like last year, I’d be posting an article a day, based on the question / challenge of that day.

Discover over Escape

You may start traveling to escape, but at some point you need to deal with your shit. Even if you left to escape a relationship, a job, or boredom – you end up discovering something about yourself. You discover yourself and discover about the world.
QUESTION 1:
What have you discovered in your travels? Did you start traveling for discovery or escape? Has (How has) your reasons for traveling changed over time?
QUESTION 2:
Why do you want to travel? Is it for escape, discovery, or both? Think about 1 thing you’d like to discover (about yourself or the world) through travel. What do you want to discover and why is this important to you?

I strongly believe that you cannot escape your problems. So I stick around to get them resolved. With that being said, my first independent trip (when I was 19) was created around the word “discover”.

There were 3 of us (I no longer have any connections to the other 2 persons), young and restless and we wanted to discover and explore Sighisoara (Romania) during the Medieval Festival. And that’s exactly what we did.

Only once (summer of 2010), in an effort to “fix” a very broken marriage, I agreed with my ex to go on a weekend trip which smelled of “escape”. Guess what? It turned out very badly and we fought about all the time: on the train to our friends in Bucharest, while we were in the mountains at the cabin, on the train back….when we arrived back in Arad. It was , however, the last drop for me and from that moment on I knew what I had to do: get the hell out of that marriage until I still have my sanity!

The next trip I took was with Alex, as a couple. To London. And what a “re-discovery” was it: I re-discovered my love for travel and my happiness.

We still travel to discover and explore, whether we spend hours in historical sites, walk on city streets or hunt for something yummy in the market.
