Athens, Greece: Itinerary for our trip

As I’ve mentioned before, we are going to Italy & Greece in March 2012 and , since the time is ticking away, I’ve finally had some spare time to put together our itinerary for our stay in Athens, Greece.

Greece Trip Itinerary: Day 1

We’ll leave Rome at 9 a.m. and arrive in Athens around noon, which means that on the first day we’ll have enough time to start figuring things out. First step: get a map! I usually get that the first time we use the metro. So, since we’ll take the metro from the airport to the city, we’ll also get a map. And try to keep track of how long the transfer takes (so we know on the way back how to plan things).

After arriving at the hotel and checking in, there are two things I badly need: a coffee and a shower (yes, in that order). I typically call Day 1 in a new city as “free time to check out things”. In this case, we’ll take a walk around and figure out distances (i.e to the Acropolis, tavernas, etc).

And yes, I also plan to work some because I’ll definitely have some hours on my hand.

Greece Trip Itinerary: Day 2

We’ve got an early meeting with our tour guide for a walking tour of Athens (after breakfast, of course). This means, for 3-4 hours we’ll be checking out sites, chit-chatting and taking photos. After lunch, we are planning to visit the the Ancient Agora and Roman forum.

Again, a bit of work time in the evening.

Greece Trip Itinerary: Day 3

I’m meeting up with a friend who lives in Athens so I sort of want her to take us around and see interesting stuff. Probably check out one or two of the museums (see list below).

Greece Trip Itinerary: Day 4

This will be a Sunday, so: watching the changing of the guards in Syntagma Square at 11 a.m. is the first thing on our list, then it’s visiting the Acropolis.

Greece Trip Itinerary: Day 5

We’ve got a day trip to Cape Sounion planned for today so, this time, I’ll try to get some work done between breakfast and the day trip. Should have about 3-4 hours on my hands for that.

Greece Trip Itinerary: Day 6

Our flight departs at 12 p.m. but we’ll be at he airport around 9:30 a.m. So, leaving right after breakfast.

Other things we want to check out (but haven’t made plans yet):

  • Railway Museum: free
  • War Museum: free
  • National Archeological Museum (7 euros)
  • National Gardens

Especially during winter (and yes, March is technically a cold month in Greece) , the museums are open until 3 p.m. so we have to plan visiting them in the mornings and then do other stuff.

I prefer to travel during the shoulder season, when the cities aren’t filled with tourists and you can feel like to belong there. There’s a different feeling than the one when you “mingle with the tourists”, I’d rather mingle with the locals.
