Airline Review: Blue Air (Bankrupt)

Update March 2023: Blue Air has declared bankruptcy, after having suspended all its flights back in September 2022.

We flew Blue Air in March 2011 on the Bucharest – London – Bucharest route. Although I won the tickets (with an article I wrote about low-cost carriers), this fact doesn’t interfere with my opinion about the airline and its services.

About Blue Air

Blue Air is a Romanian low-cost carrier, based in Bucharest. Their base is Henri Coanda International Airport (OTP) in Bucharest, Romania. The company has been continuously operating since 2004. Currently, they operate the following types of airplanes:23 Boeing 737 aircraft series 737-300, 737-400, 737-500 and 737-800 with a capacity between 120 and 189 seats.

Aside from their main base in Bucharest, they also have three more bases in Romania (Bacau, Cluj Napoca, and Iasi), as well as in Cyprus (Larnaca), and Italy (Turin).

My experience with Blue Air

I have flown before but this was my first low-cost flight. I didn’t know what to expect, really. Once on board my only real complaint was about the seat. The person in front of me reclined their seat completely and I had to do the same, otherwise, it felt really cramped.

We flew in a Boeing 737-400 and I stayed at the window seat. Luckily, it wasn’t a bumpy ride on the way to London but on the way back, the weather was cloudy and we could feel the air moving, too.

There was the possibility to buy snacks on board. But I refrain from doing that because I really dislike the cramped toilet (so don’t want to push my luck so that I have to use it).

I would recommend the airline for their services and how they treated us (at the check-in, when we boarded the plane, etc). However, I would have appreciated being told that I could have checked in online (and thus, hopefully, could have chosen a better seat).
