6 Best European Destinations to Visit in March

March is one of my favorite months to travel in Europe. Some of the best European destinations to visit in March are also among my all-time favorites? Why? The weather starts to get warmer – and by the end of the month it can warm enough to stroll in a t-shirt in Southern Europe – but the prices are still low, because, technically, it is still the cold season.

So, if you’ve been thinking to explore Europe just as spring is making its comeback, here are some of the best European destinations to visit in March:

European Destinations to Visit in March: Vienna, Austria

vienna
March average temps: 6.4 C / 43.5 F
Accommodation price: from 43 EUR per night in a one bedroom house (for 2 adults) (book your accommodation in Vienna now)

Austria’s capital is a very popular destination to visit in December because of the Christmas Markets it is home to. But Vienna offers so much more!

While Prater is open year-round, you really want to visit during the peak travel time, which starts on Mar 15. And that’s when you can enjoy a lot of attractions! Of course, no trip to Vienna is complete without a long walk on Ring Street. And if you are like me, you may want to explore Mariahilfer Street, too. And many museums.

European Destinations to Visit in March: Prague, Czech Rep (Czechia)

Prague
March average temps: 3 C / 37.4 F
Accommodation price: from 38 EUR per night in a flat (for 2 adults) (book your accommodation in Prague now)

Just like Vienna, Prague is also well known as a winter destination because of the Christmas Market. And fairytale landscape when snow falls on the city. But once the winter is gone, the city has other beautiful things to offer, too. Explore the immense Prague Castle – the biggest ancient castle in the world -, walk on Charles’ bridge, and explore the Old Town. A lot of museums will also keep you busy. And if you like beer, then you are in heaven.

European Destinations to Visit in March: Athens, Greece

Atens
March average temps: 12.3 C / 54.1 F
Accommodation price: from 24 EUR per night in a double room (book your accommodation in Athens now)

I loved Athens in March! Yes, it was quite damn – we seem to have a thing for getting rained on when we travel. But it was also very green and the flowers were starting to show their lovely faces. On the plus side, the historical sites were pretty much empty and the prices very affordable.

Any trip to Athens should also involve tasting the amazing Greek food. And of course, exploring the many historical sites. Don’t miss the Acropolis and the Greek Agora. And if you still have time on your hands, the Roman Agora and the Temple of Olympian Zeus are also amazing.

European Destinations to Visit in March: Budapest, Hungary

March average temps: 6 C / 42.8 F
Accommodation price: from 33 EUR per night in a double room (book your accommodation in Budapest now)

It is still winter in Budapest in March…and is not yet gone in Central Europe, but the weather is improving and the crowds are not yet back. The Great Market Hall offers the chance to not only get a tasty introduction into the cuisine – and a chance to get some spices for home – but offers great refuge to hide from the colder days or rain. On a sunny day, climb Gellert Hill all the way to the Citadella and enjoy the lovely views towards Pest and the Parliament.

A walk on the Promenade is my favorite thing to do no matter when I visit. Once in a while, there are some new statues added so you can get even more interesting photos.

If you are after a unique experience, take M1 (yellow line) which is a metro line going underground (as in right under the ground). Stop at Heroes Square and explore the area. Don’t forget to feed the ducks on the pond.

European Destinations to Visit in March: Dublin, Ireland

dublin
March average temps: 6.8 C / 44.24 F
Accommodation price: from 106 EUR per night in a one bedroom apartment (for 2 adults) (book your accommodation in Dubli now)

St. Patrick’s Day anyone? Dublin is the obvious choice if you want to travel for this holiday (although, to be honest, London was a good idea, too!). And of course, there are a lot of places to visit. Don’t miss visiting Dublin Castle, the Botanical Gardens, and the many museums.

European Destinations to Visit in March: Rome, Italy

March average temps: 10.6 C / 51 F
Accommodation price: from 33 EUR per night in a double room (book your accommodation in Rome now)

I am not a big fan of Rome but, I have to admit, visiting it in March was a much better idea than visiting in September. Even if you only have several days on your hands, you can check out the Forum and Colosseum in one of them; and then check out Piazza Navona, Spanish Steps, and Fontana din Trevi on another. It is true that Rome is an open-air museum, so lace up and walk. A lot. The weather is really nice in March, too.
