10 Benefits of Dancing Argentine Tango

Argentine Tango has its origins in the docks of Buenos Aires, where the immigrants’ music blended with the local candombe rhythms. After going through its Golden Era and also becoming really popular in Europe, this South American dance is practiced around the world.

We’ve been taking Argentine Tango classes for a good wile (a.n. since Sep 2017). And although we’ve taken Latin Dances classes back in 2011 (and later in 2022 and 2023), our hearts stay with Argentine Tango.

After living the tango lifestyle and researching quite a bit about the benefits of Argentine Tango, I decided to tell you all about it.

Dancing Argentine tango gives you flexibility:

Aside from the fact that you need to warm up before dancing, the more you dance, the more flexible you’ll be. And you’ll thank your body for many things later on. Most often, basic yoga poses are used to warm up before the Argentine Tango classes.

Dancing Argentine tango gives you strength:

Dancing builds muscle strength. To dance tango you are forced to engage your core muscles, which will build a strong core. And your legs will also look amazing. All of this also helps to have a superb posture (on the ronda and outside of it).

Dancing Argentine tango gives endurance:

Dancing is a form of cardio; although it doesn’t seem as hard as jogging, it does work your cardio system and builds endurance. Just take a look at your fitness tracker if it has a heart-rate monitor.

Dancing Argentine tango increases confidence:

Dancing tango is a social activity and it will increase your self-confidence and sense of well being. Many psychologists recommend dancing for those going through a divorce.

Dancing Argentine tango burns calories:

Dancing burns 5 to 10 calories per minute, depending on the level of exercise.

But, if you are looking to lose weight, don’t relay on it to burn too many calories, especially when you are starting out. As you get experience, you can surely end up in cardio mode as you dance fast milongas, for example.

Dancing Argentine tango regulates your cholesterol levels:

It is demonstrated that dancing regulates the amount of bad vs good cholesterol in your body. It also aids sugar control.

Dancing Argentine tango improves balance:

Balancing in more and more positions can be tricky but you’ll get the hang of it. It is true that practice makes it perfect though. And you’ll need those yoga poses I mentioned above, too.

Don’t expect to improve your balance fast. It takes practice and it’s super tricky in heels – yes, us girls have it awesome.

Dancing Argentine tango makes you happier:

It elevates the endorphin levels. Why have chocolate when you can dance? πŸ™‚

Dancing Argentine tango reduces stress:

Argentine tango is considered one of the best ways to meditate, thus helping you calm down and reduce stress levels, too. You need to be present so that you can engage with the leader. This forces you into an active state of meditation. And the more you practice, the easier you’ll achieve it. And the more amazing it will feel.

Dancing Argentine tango strengthens the relationship:

If you dance with your significant other or even with a friend, your relationship will get stronger as you do fun things together. Never a dull moment anymore.

Bonus: It’s a great meditation tool:

If you’ve been thinking to try meditation but can’t stand still, Argentine Tango might be for you. Because you need to be in the present to lead & follow, your body enters a flow state, which is similar to what one achieves by other forms of meditation. Argentine Tango flow is similar to the Tai Chi / Qigong one.

If you travel to Arad, Romania and want to dance Argentine Tango, hit me up with an email (or a message on my social channels). I teach with my husband at Cris & Alex Tango Arad (our school), we are both certified dance instructors, and can help you learn and improve.

Pro tip from a traveler who dances: you can mix travel with dancing Argentine tango. There are a lot of festivals and events around the world. You can easily add a day or two to the travel time or just don’t go to all classes (you’ll burn out at first anyway) and use the down time to explore.
