Romantic activities during fall and winter

Let’s just say that since both of us dislike cold and wet weather, it’s been quite a challenge to find romantic activities to do during fall and winter.

Typically we’ll look for a place to be expats in for a while – during the coldest time of the year – but that doesn’t happen each year.

Still, even in the cold & bleak Northern Hemisphere, fall & winter have their charms. Between fall foliage, Christmas Markets, and a bunch of indoor activities, it’s not that hard to find something romantic to do with your significant other.

I’ve never been someone who declares herself as being romantic, but…sometimes I want to do something special for us.

Here are some ideas of fall & winter romantic activities to add to your repertoire:

Fall & winter romantic activities: Take advantage of the nice weather (read: sunny) and take a walk

Regardless of the date in the calendar, when it’s sunny we like to spend some time in nature, taking walks and playing with our camera. Usually, between 2 pm and 5 pm it’s the warmest weather. So that’s when we go out.

Fall & winter romantic activities: Plan a games day / evening

We don’t like the same computer games, so that’s not happening too often BUT we love to play rummy. A friendly game plus something to eat (usually home-made) and some warm tea or mulled wine offer enough entertainment for both of us. Plus, it’s also cheap. This is a good idea for those days when it rains or snows.

Fall & winter romantic activities: Go out and play billiards or darts

There are some places where it’s cheap to play billiards and to drink a beer of a tea. Once every month or every other month , we indulge into something like this.

Alternatively, look up a concert or a stand-up comedy show. Sometimes the entrance fee aren’t very expensive. And there’s always karaoke.

Fall & winter romantic activities: Plan a movies night or go out to watch a movie

The budget option is to watch a movie at home; the more expensive was is to go to the cinema. I prefer to watch something at home, usually a series I’ve been fascinated by. This is a good idea for those days when it rains or snows.

Mostly likely you already have a subscription to a streaming service, be it Netflix, HBO Go or anything similar. Use it!

Fall & winter romantic activities: Learn to dance together

If you’ve always wanted to learn to dance – maybe Salsa, Tango, or anything else -, now is the perfect time to start. As tango dancers & studios, we wouldn’t recommend starting online but if studios aren’t available in your area, you can dip your toes into the dances even with virtual practices.

However, do make sure to: take private lessons at one point (when you feel you want to stick with it) and definitely try to get to a studio when possible.

Once you know some basic steps, have fun and dance together in the privacy of your home. And later, in the great outdoors.

Fall & winter romantic activities: Cook something together

In our case , it’s me cooking and hubby eating. But the idea is to get both of you involved. We shop together and then I make something special once in a while. Such as pizza, or muffins , or pancakes. This is a good idea for those days when it rains or snows. I prefer to cook a nice veggies soup with homemade noodles when it’s crappy outside.

Fall & winter romantic activities: Plan a romantic evening indoors

….complete with a nice dinner, some mulled wine, fruits…soft music, candles… you get the point. You can be as adventurous as you want to be. There’s even a change to try some strip-tease for your honey, right? This is a good idea for those days when it rains or snows.

Fall & winter romantic activities: Take a day trip or a weekend away

We are lucky to have some good options for day trips: Szeged, Hunedoara, Lipova… even better, during a week end we can go to Budapest, Moneasa, Cluj, even Sighisoara

Depending on your budget, there are interesting things to do close to town. You’ll feel refreshed after two days away from the daily hustle and bustle.

Fall & winter romantic activities: Go shopping

I bet there’s always something you need to buy, so head to the mall. It’s warm inside and you might even find something nice and cheap to get.

Fall & winter romantic activities: Visit a Christmas Market

Maybe you have one in your town or maybe you want to plan a bit of traveling for this purpose. Either way, you can find interesting ornaments and gifts at Christmas Markets all over Europe.
