Review: L’Altra Casa Apartments on Vaci Utca in Budapest

dscn6212

Address: Vaci Utca 9, 1052 Budapest

How to get to:

From Keleti pu., go to the metro and take line 2 (M2 red) to Deak ter. Exit for Elisabeth Ter and make a right. On the corner there will be Starbucks cafe which leads onto a pedestrian street. Make a left and follow the street all the way to Hard Rock Cafe. Now make another left and on the right you’ll soon see nr.9.

Be careful when you arrive by taxi. Vaci utca is a pedestrian street and the taxi needs to stop somewhere in the back.

Betty asked us to wait in front of the entrance for her. We have sms-ed her before getting to Keleti pu.

What I liked:

  • location, location, location; we were close to absolutely everything and most of the time we walked absolutely everywhere
  • wi-fi; we had free wi-fi at the apartment and it was really decent
  • silence; although located on a very busy pedestrian street, we faced the inner courtyard so it was silence all the time. The view wasn’t exactly nice though
  • price; compared to other accommodation in the area this is was super cheap. I paid 65 euros for 3 nights for 2 persons
  • rather spacious

What I didn’t like:

  • 6 guests, 4 chairs. You do the math!
  • the mocka pot was horrible. Ended up buying instant coffee because we couldn’t use the darn thing.
  • very small kitchen; I didn’t plan to cook but more than 1 people in the kitchen wasn’t even a possibility.
  • just as small of a bathroom and only with shower. In a budget hotel in Athens I had bigger bathroom with tub.
  • bookable via expedia or venere so if you don’t have credit card you need friends to do it for you although you can pay cash on arrival

When we decided the destination we are going to visit, our friends from Holland knew they could find something cheap and nice. And they did. I think we had about five choices within our budget and I suggest this location would probably suit us best as we were close to absolutely everything we wanted to see and close to the metro, too.

There is a CBA (supermarket) quite close (from St.Istvan Basilica make a left) and some non-stop stores (which are pricey) but when it comes to eating cheap and good meals, you’d have to go Astoria (on M2) , easily reachable on foot from Vaci utca. On the way to Astoria I found Gourmand Cafe back in December 2011 and at the corner of Astoria we found Bali Cafe this year.

As for the apartment, they say it can house up to 6 guests. I would say it’s more suitable for 4 guests but we didn’t feel crammed. However, the kitchen and bathroom are annoyingly small.

I didn’t take any photos inside the apartment so I’d have to hunt whether my friends did.

Generally speaking, I prefer to choose a Downtown accommodation anytime rather than somewhere too far from the sites.
