Peschici , Italy

Peschici is a tiny town perched on the Garganic coast of Italy, offering stunning views of the Adriatic Sea. It is a resort but if you don’t plan to spend your time sunbathing, you can do what we did: visit the old city and the castle.

How to get to

The closest airport is in Bari. During summer there are a bunch of buses connecting Bari to the tiny towns on the Garganic coast. During winter, some buses still work but you might want to look into renting a car.

We visited Peschici as a day trip from Vieste , one day in September 2013.

The most interesting part of the city is the fortified old city. The tiny street, white washed houses and the atmosphere takes you to…an island. It really reminded me of Anafiotika, too (the area in Athens where streets are tiny and houses white-washed). While still inhabited, Peschici Vechio is filled with places to eat ice-cream or buy souvenirs.

Don’t miss the secret area – which is a museum depicting stuff in a torture chamber. Entrance was 3 euros/adult and there is also a small garden castle with stunning views of the sea.

Tip: The gelateria you see in the photo has some amazing gelato. There is also a restaurant where you can eat.

Coasta Garganica and Gargano National Park are not marketed in Central-Eastern Europe – which , honestly, I think it’s a good thing! It’s not cheap to travel to this part of Italy and it’s not cheap to stay for a while, either.

However, the food is not that expensive. Prepare to part with about 20 euros for lunch for two (a pizza – split cause it’s big- and two cappuccini or bruschetii for two and some sort of soda). Also the markets are cheap so you can find really nice stuff (especially during summer).
