Day 9 prompt is here: What is the best experience you’ve ever had while traveling?

Athens, March 2012. The best travel experience we’ve had so far. Greece has been on my list of “must visit” places since 2002 or so (when I started working in a travel). It took me quite a while to visit Athens but it surely was worth the wait.
We flew EasyJet from Rome (we’ve also visited Rome and other Italian cities during that 2 weeks vacation) and we had accommodation in Monastiraki area. It was partially sponsored and the trip was part “business” (research for work)…but hey, who doesn’t love visiting historical sites for research? I love that!
The hotel (Soho Hotel) put us in a triple (the doubles were full) with AC, internet, TV, huge bathroom with hot water and bath tub. They had free tea and coffee non-stop in the lobby and also books to read and games to play. Heaven!
Plus we were minutes away from Monastiraki square, Ancient Agora, Roma Agora and about 20 min walk from Acropolis. Needless to say we walked absolutely everywhere in Athens (we took the bus from the airport and the metro back to the airport).
My favorite site was the Ancient Agora. And out of all the meals we had in Athens probably the cheese plate in a taverna was the best, but everything else was just great, too. Including the cheap frappes we enjoyed with our guide after the walking tour.
Probably I consider this the “best experience” because I also got to meet live a lovely artist who has written guest posts on the site I write for work. We were “virtual friends” but meeting live was great. Of course, we still talk via email.
I cannot wait to go back to Athens. There’s a lot more to enjoy in Greece’s capital. This year, Ryanair has reported large sales for the summer season. They opened some new routes flying to Athens and Rhodes, among other places in Greece.
