#DoYouIndie Practice caution, but not Paranoia

I am , again, participating in the Indie Challenge hosted by Bootsnall. Just like last year, I’d be posting an article a day, based on the question / challenge of that day.

Practice caution, but not Paranoia.

When traveling it’s good be be cautious and safe, but you don’t want to become so paranoid about your safety that you don’t enjoy your journey.
QUESTION:
What is caution vs paranoia and how do you differentiate between the two? How can you practice travel caution without becoming paranoid?

OK, I admit, I am probably borderline paranoid both at home and when I travel.

I live in a country where one of the minorities is known to be very skillful pickpockets. I was always taught to be careful what I have in the front pocket of my rucksack or the back pocket of my jeans. I was almost robbed in high school , in the tram, coming home from classes. I say “almost” because even the front pocket of my rucksack was opened, I only had tissues and tampons there. Suck on that!

So yes, I’ve gotten into some habits which would keep me safe, regardless if I am at home or I travel. Some of them are:

  • the first thing I do when I get home is lock the door behind me. I do the same when I travel
  • I never drink beyond “happy” point; meaning I am never tipsy unless I am in the comfort of my own home
  • I don’t leave my belongings behind when I go to the loo, whether I am in a restaurant, train or plane
  • I never plug both headphones when I travel or when I walk on the street
  • My cell always has the capability to make calls (roaming activated and subscription paid)
  • I have insurance: home insurance, health insurance, travel insurance.
  • I have a digital copy of my important documents available anytime (on a USB stick)
  • When I travel I set an hour when I check with my parents; they know something has happened if I don’t call within 1/2h of the set time
  • My parents (and sometimes my brother in law) know our travel itinerary
  • When I travel I keep a notepad with important phone numbers (hotel, embassy)
