An hour at Arad Citadel

This year we’ve been to Sighisoara, Deva , Alba Carolina in Alba Iulia , Bologa Fortress and Siria Fortress …it was time to visit Arad Citadel, as well. The only “issue” with it is that it’s militarized so access is allowed on special days only. September 21 is such a day, as we celebrate European Heritage Day.

The access is limited and you need to show your ID at the entrance (they record the name and ID number). Also, military personal is guiding you around (not providing any info, but pretty much “guard” you not to take photos of what you shouldn’t or go where you shouldn’t). Only the museum and the small chapel were open today.

Arad Citadel was built during the reign of the Austrian Empress Maria Terezia. It took 20 years to build the citadel (1762 – 1783) and when completed it comprised the commandment, the garrison and the hospital monastery. Now what’s left the monastery’s church is in ruins.

The citadel played an important part during the 1848-1849 Revolution and it was where the Hungarian Revolution ended (with the execution of the 13 generals). It was also where many important persons where help prisoners (including the one responsible for starting World War I).

The museum comprises only info on the Romanian wars (Independence, World War I and II), including some weapons, documents and clothing.

Today it took us maybe an hour to visit the citadel (or what was allowed to visit). I found a depressing place. It is in ruins and neither the army or the civil society has money to do something. Word is they won’t have money to make it a public attraction anyway.
