7 Best European Destinations to Visit in May

The amazing weather together with the still affordable prices makes pretty much any place a best European destination to visit in May. But some cities and areas stand out from the crowd. Check out our picks!

Rhodes, Greece

May average temps: 20.5 C / 69 F
Average accommodation price: from 14 USD per night (via Booking.com, special offer)

May is one of the most beautiful months to visit any Greek island. And if you don’t want to go where everyone is going – those would be the Cyclades -, head to the Dodecanese Islands. All 12 of them are stunning, but Rhodes is the most well know and also home to an amazing Medieval Town.

Malta

May average temps: 18.8 C / 66 F
Average accommodation price: from 98 USD per night (via Booking.com)

This tiny archipelago which mixes European culture with African vibes is a great choice for a trip in May. Don’t forget to pack your swimsuit as the weather is warm enough for soaking up the sun! Stunning old cities, amazing food, and beautiful beaches, all welcome you in Malta. Oh, and if you like Game of Thrones, you can take a tour of the filming locations.

Bergen, Norway

May average temps: 10.5 C / 51 F
Average accommodation price: from 70 USD per night (via Booking.com, special offer)

Visiting the UNESCO protected Bryggen is special any time of the year, but in May you’ll have the best experience. Why? May 17 is Constitution Day in Norway and that means you are in for a treat of festivities, parades, and happy moments.

Crisana, Romania

May average temps: 16 C / 61 F
Average accommodation price: from 21 USD per night (via Booking.com)

Although not as popular as Transylvania, Crisana is a stunning region bordering Hungary. There are excellent (and well maintained) hiking trails which are a delight to explore during the warmer late spring days. The hike to Vadu Crisului Cave is easy and can also be done as a day trip from Cluj.

Vienna, Austria

May average temps: 16.5 C / 61.7 F
Average accommodation price: from 43 USD per night (via Booking.com)

While Vienna is mostly known as a winter destination (for the Christmas Markets), nothing makes a city lovelier than the spring months. Head to the Schonbrunn Gardens and enjoy the flowers in bloom. Or just stroll any of the city parks.

Bratislava, Slovakia

May average temps: 15 C / 59 F
Average accommodation price: from 33 USD per night (via Booking.com)

The tiny capital on the Danube, Bratislava offer a lot of interesting free things to do , making it one of the most affordable places to visit on the Old Continent. In May, the ferry route to Devin – to visit the stunning Devin Castle – is already open so make sure to plan a visit. The Old City might be tiny but it’s very picturesque and the Danube Promenade offers quite a wide space for strolling.

Naples, Italy

May average temps: 17.4 C / 63.2 F
Average accommodation price: from 39 USD per night (via Booking.com)

Naples is one of those cities which you either love or hate. We loved the Old Town. And since Pompeii and Herculaneum are both nearby, we ended up loving every single minute of our time spent in the area. While the two sites can be visited in a day, you’d want to slow down and really enjoy them. The sun is already strong in May, so plan accordingly. Don’t forget to eat some pizza!
