16 European Destinations for 2016

Back in 2013 I’ve written a similar article, 14 destinations for 2014 and , looking back, I actually did visit some of those cities (Eger in May 2015, Naples in September 2014). So, here’s to another year of travel!

Lisbon, Portugal

I keep adding Lisbon to my wish list, hoping that I will make it here soon. The city is compact and looks very charming. Plus , Sintra Castle calls my name.

Prague, Czech Republic

I am on the fence about Prague: some friends love it, some say it shows it’s been rebuilt. I know I don’t want to visit during winter and I’ve already chosen Bratislava over Prague for our wedding anniversary in 2014. But, I am still thinking to give Prague a chance, maybe on a mini-European tour when I hit Bratislava again.

Belgrade, Serbia

Belgrade is the only capital located on the Danube which I have not visited yet. Been trying to get here but since we don’t own a car, it’s a bit…challenging. It is supposed to be lively and charming.

Dublin, Ireland

What can I say? I’m still hunting down old castles. And I don’t mind Guinness either.

Edinburgh, Scotland

More castles, of course. And just enjoying a lovely town.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Another superb town, Dubrovnik is just how I like the cities I visit to be: full of history, easy to navigate on foot and offering stunning views. And also quite a challenge to get to if you don’t drive. Yeah, it’s touristy, though.

Santorini, Greece

This one is for the romantic in me. I would love to try the wines and see the spectacular sunsets. Plus, do a lot of walking and enjoying the Santorini sunsets!

Meteora, Greece

I am not religious, but I would love to see the views from the top and also visit the monasteries (for their artistic value). It is another place a bit hard to get to…yes, thanks to not having a car.

Milan, Italy

I have a thing for steps and seeing cities from above. I wouldn’t mind doing some shopping as well. And I certainly miss the cornetto.

Venice, Italy

Again, for the romantic in me. I was , at one point, thinking Venice for New Year’s in 2016 but although airfare was cheap, accommodation…was not. I still want to see the city though.

Valletta, Malta

Malta also sprung in my plans several times before since there are flights from Budapest. It can be a bit on the expensive side, though.

Athens, Greece

I really want to go back to Athens. And with Aegean offering decent airfare from Budapest, who knows what 2016 might bring. There are so many day trips from Athens to enjoy on top of everything else!

Sovata, Romania

When I was looking for a place to go on our honeymoon, several friends suggested Sovata. It is not very easy to reach – unless you drive or can stand buses – but it’s supposed to be beautiful.

Biertan, Romania

We have passed through Biertan in 2013, but the fortified church was closed when we got there. I’d love to go back.

Targoviste, Romania

Vlad Tepes’s capital city still has the remains of some interesting towers and historical sites.

Transfagarasan, Romania

This is not a city, I know. It is an amazing road which link Wallachia to Transylvania, Transfagarasan is a road I’ve been hoping to drive on someday. And also to see Poienari Castle, which can be accessed from the road.
