During our current stay in Puglia, we have been blessed to be able to witness a traditional fishing demonstration on a Trabucco of Gargano.

But first, what are these Trabucchi? They are interesting wood structures used for fishing. Wait, but wouldn’t fishermen use boats? Not on the Gargano Coast. Terrorized by the Turkish pirates, the fishermen couldn’t go out in the sea to fish. Very likely, the idea of fishing a large amount of fish from the mainland came during the 1550s, the times of many Pirates attacks striking Vieste, Manfredonia, and Peschici.

About 250 years ago, the first Trabucco was built and being a “Trabuccolante” (someone who could build one and fish on one) became a real profession up to the 1950s-60s.

Nowadays, however, as you pass by the Gargano coast, you’ll notice that the Trabucchi are not used anymore. Thankfully, a non-proft organization has decided to restore them and show the world how beautiful they are. They organize fishing demonstrations and all money made go towards the restoration.

Our experience

We were taking a day trip on the Gargano Coast and a local told us that we may be able to see a working trabucco if we venture outside the cities and keep going on the coast road. And we did. We first saw it working from a nearby beach and were mesmerized by the huge net going in the water.

We then hiked to the trabucco and asked if we could go up on it. Luckily, we were allowed to watch as they pulled the net up to check on what was caught. A really interesting experience.
